Hey guys! My nephew is just about to turn 16 and he has an iPOD. He's looking to purchase his first starter HU and of course it needs to be "iPOD ready" but that brings up a question. What additional items will he need to acquire in order for his iPOD to work through his HU? If I'm not mistaken he'll need an adapter which will run another $50-$100 depending on the model, right? For instance, if he were to go with this HU http://www.crutchfield.com/S-JSx5ehjfc1l/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=286350&I=023MONTERR then he'd also need the adaptor http://www.crutchfield.com/S-JSx5ehjfc1l/popups/accessory.asp?i=023IPODBOX in order for it all to work? Thanks for confirming/clarifying! Replies (7) cplkittle on 11/28/2006 21:36:14 judging from the links you provided and the information on the page, this is all you will need, and the iPod can be controlled by the HU. My only concern is that being able to controll the ipod through the HU is still fairly new and this feature should have been very prominently advertised. The fact that I had to click on the read more link to find that it controlled the ipod worries me a little. This should be your first question to crutchfield when you call to order it. Don't forget you will need a wiring adapter, possibly an antenna adaptor, and also a mounting kit unless the factory radio is the same size as the replacement. Overall, this radio has alot of nice features. Let us know if you run into any problems installing it. jrwsound on 11/28/2006 21:52:00 Super! Thanks for your help. We've not yet decided on that unit but it's in the running. It certainly is cheap (maybe too cheap!). Nevertheless, your help is appreciated and I'll be sure to lean on ya'll if any issues come up! Other cheap Blaupunkts aren't issue free. This one is too new to have reviews on caraudio.com but other models seem to consistantly have an issue of the display being too dim in direct daylight. I'd be more concerned with functionality issues but it's nice to get a feel for what we're in for with an entry level HU. Thanks again! cplkittle on 11/28/2006 22:40:45 I try really hard not to put down the choices people make. Blaupunkt is not a very reliable choice. On the other hand it may last 5-7 years with no problems. http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069880_291048449,00.html This might be a better choice, for the same price, and the adapter: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069910_307492523,00.html is the same price as well. I know for a fact that this radio integrates (throught the interface) with great ease. It displays the iPod information in several ways (by artist, title, playlists) and you can change the way it displays this information. To be honest, navigation through music on the Pioneer HU is, to me easier than doing it from the iPod itself. swez on 11/28/2006 23:16:57 I'd have to agree that for a low budget HU with many nice features, The DEH-P4800MP offers a lot for low dough. There are 2 interface options with this HU. Aux 1 is a mini jack that plugs right into the face panel of the HU. Limited display data, but low cost and effective. The Aux 2 feature is the one Kit showed above. This offers direct connects to IP Bus functions and you will get playlist functions and controls for the I-Pod, with this interface. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-DHKwvNYTnB5/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&tab=detailed_info&i=130DEHP480#Tab Swez jrwsound on 11/29/2006 00:27:32 Thanks thanks thanks. I'll forward these recommendations onto my nephew. As usual you guys are a great help!
