HU wont turn on

i just tried to put my panasonic HU in and it wont turn on..

there is no room back there for the wires and it sits up really far. so i figured i would mess with it later so i left it. i put everything back and hook up the battery and it wont work...

i got a metra wiring harness, and the mounting kit is fine, and the ant adaptor is fine. something has to be wrong with that wiring harness..

i plugged the car wire thing into the wiring harness and soldered all those wires into the plug that came with the HU.. and it doesnt work.. if that makes any sense..

Check your fuses.

This is where a test meter, (Multimeter) comes in handy Luke.

The meter will help you find:

1. ACC/IGN source for the RED wire

2. Constant +12 is needed to retain memory and other functions too. That would be your YELLOW wire on the HU

3. Ground (BLACK) needs to be connected to a known good ground
in dash

These are the primary wires you need to get the player to fire up. Then, there are the paired speaker wires to mate as well.

NOTE: Some GM cars of this vintage also have chimes and other warning circuits that are controlled by the factory HU. If you don't use the expensive adapter kit that enables them, they won't function. These are not mandatory functions, so they can be disabled and the vehicle will still operate.

FYI: Without a meter, one is flying blind on finding the correct wires in the stock harness, to get the new player to operate. The aftermarket adapter harness helps eliminate some of the guess work, but it's bulky and one must take good care to bundle wiring so it will fit back into the pocket well.

PS In many dash pockets, there are access holes that allow one to tuck the extra wires and harness back deep into the dash so the HU will fit properly.

i own a 2001 cavalier and i installed the metra harness but i couldnt find no one that had the harness connecter so i hard wired it and i was able to get it to work good but the factory dash on my car wasnt wide enough for my panasonic cq-c7401u player which is a normal size deck. i had to fabricate a little to fit it and now it sits really nice in there, i can take a picture and put it on maybe so you can see to compare. i didnt have very much room behind either with the sub pre-out and the aux pre-out connected.

i don't think 2001 cavaliers use ignition wires at the radios. you'll have to run one. go to the fusebox or the ignition harness. if you go to the harness, you'll tap into a fat orange wire. the harness can only be accessed at the firewall in those cars because you can't access it at the ignition switch because of the shape of the dash.

make sure to fuse it!! 5 amps is plenty. also, if you go to the fusebox, tap into the RAP fuse if available and the radio will cut off when you open the door instead of when you turn off the key.

do you think the walmart dmm is good enough? i have seen a couple out there for like $20..

i know the chimes will be gone... o well.

Yes, I have one of those $20.00 DMM's and it works just as well as many other meters I have used in the past, that cost way more.

well me and a couple of my friends, who know what theyre doing, hooked it up the way they thought would be good. he used this meter thing, idk what it was, but it had a red probe and a black probe and he put one on the indash connector to the faceplate, with the faceplate off. then grounded the other one. it said like 4v or something aorund there....

so now im thinkin the HU was bad... gonna try to send it back and get another or whatever comes out of that mess..

That vehicle requires a different type of harness than one you will fiind at wal-mart. If you have a bose system or onstar and want to keep either one of them you need either a $60 radio relocation harness which allows you to put the factory radio in the trunk and run wires all the way back up front to the new deck, or buy the (Peripherial brand) GMAH-24 or GMAH-24B. both of these run around $150. The 24 is for onstar, the 24b is for onstar with bose. These will retain the doorchime, key in ignition chime, headlight on when keys are out of ignition chime, all of which dings through the driver door speaker (through the radio) I think the interior dimmer works through the radio as well.

Some chevrolets around that year model (only saw it once in a malibu) run the entire interior on a 5volt system. I was putting on an alarm on this one, not the radio, so I don't know if the radio works that way or not.

Back to Bose systems, you will need this module if you want to use the factory speakers, the amplifiers are difficult to bypass. I have seen cases where the aftermarket radio is too powerful for the amplifer's normally low voltage input.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but even installers have problems with these vehicles, unless we use the proper module/harness.

If you don't have bose or onstar, ignore this post except for the doorchime part.

no onstar or bose.... im not real worried about the door chimes.

In this game, thought it should go and "knowing how it should go" are two different things.

There are 2 Pro installers, (Experienced Techs) responding to this post and both are noting very important aspects about this vehicle... it's not an easy one to do. A 3rd guy who did his, mentioned some challenges to getting this unit to fit the dash. That tells me this is not a good one to cut ones teeth on.

You may wish to consider having a Pro handle this job.
