1999 Camaro with Monsoon installation question

I have been out of car audio installation for 6 years so I don't have access to the latest tech support. I am installing a cd player w/ 4 speakers into my mothers 1999 Camaro with the Monsoon system in it. My questions are ... Can I install an after-market radio in this car without bypassing the factory amp? Can I use the standard installation wiring harness? Are the factory speakers 2 ohm, 4 ohm, or 8 ohms? I remember from when I was in installation that when you tried to integrate an aftermarket cd player to a Chevrolet Bose system there was "engine whine", will this be the case with the Monsoon system? Last question...Where is the factory amp in this car?

Thanks in advance
Tony

Yes, you can install an Aftermarket HU in this car and use an adapter harness that allows for use of the factory amps too. Crutchfield has notes and selection guides for that vehicle and you can look up various HU models you like and check the install notes for the extra adapters that are needed:

Not sure what the ohmic value on Monsoon speakers are. Am sure they are optimized for Monsoon amps used and can handle more power than non-Monsoon equipped models. Even so, the stock speakers are very low grade quality and poor to fair fidelity. A pair of tweeters may or may not be used here.

Just pick a HU model you like and look up the details about install notes for that specific HU in this vehicle. (Ie: Poneer DEH-P4800MP)

PS I do not know where the Monsoon amp(s) are located. Typically, they are under the dash or in a side panel in the cargo area of most cars. Call Crutch and get some vehicle specific details from thier Techs. They are pretty good at helping you figure out vehicle specific installation and configuration issues.

you can add any aftermarket HU to this vehicle without any problems whatsoever. just buy the metra wiring harness 70-1858 (or 80-1858 if you go to circuit city). you'll need to power the factory amp, so make sure you use the remote wire of the deck to power it.

factory amp is under rear deck.

I hear the monsoon systems can blow a speaker pretty easily though, might consider some x-overs......

Here's a general overview of a Monsoon Premium audio system:

http://delphi.com/consumers_nvo/nvo/aec/mpa/

Note the front speakers use a 2 ohm Midbass driver, 4 ohm tweets (Door panels) and a 3.5", 4 ohm mids in the dash and a pair of coaxial 6x9's in rear dech.

They also use an 8 channel amp, EQ and active crossover networks to feed each speaker the correct audio frequencies to each speaker. I would venture to guess that speakers are also time aligned to get good imaging characteristics as well.
