i have a volfenhag 1000 watt dual voice coil sub...when the sub comes on it dosnt put out any bass it it hits but all i get is a very high pitched ping noise...is this somthing i can fix Replies (11) swez on 11/7/2006 20:13:09 That sounds like a mechanical failure in the sub. The coil may still be OK, but some of the mechanical joints that connect the coil to the sub cone may have failed. (Spider to cone or spider to coil set) Try a known good sub at modest power on the amp you have in there now. If that sub sounds good, your V-hag has bit the dust and needs replacement. What amp are you presently using for your sub? (Make/model #) Swez swez on 11/8/2006 00:14:47 That's good... this sub is really a poor value and made very cheaply. Now you have an excuse/reason to buy a good one. This LA-468 is a low power amp and when set up incorrectly, it can damage a sub by too much distortion at outputs when pushed. What's the recommended fuse value for this amp? (30-40 amp fuse?) swez danny122786 on 11/8/2006 00:20:50 it uses a 15 amp fuse ive used this same set up for almost a year and it hasnt had a problem it just happend one day there were no sighns or nothing swez on 11/8/2006 00:29:33 Wow... that's a very low powered amp. (~200 RMS when bridged) If using a bandpass box or incorrect ported boxes, this amp will be so bad on distortion, it will eventually kill a good sub. (if used improperly) This type of sub failure is often associated with underpowered amps that are clipping heavily. (Distortion of >50%) This causes excess heat to build up in the sub and causes failures as noted. FYI: Watch the sub cone for movement. When we see good piston action on a sub at power, that's a good sign it's cooling well. If the piston action is minimal, the sub cannot cool itself properly and it will eventually fail. Are you interested in building a very nice bass engine later? If yes, we can show you how. Swez danny122786 on 11/8/2006 00:39:48 the manual says it is 300 RMS when bridged but you seem to know your stuff so i beleive you..... i would like to build a nice system but im on a very low budget so any advice on a good cheap system works...i drive a 1986 isuzu pup so theres not much room in the cab so it really doesnt take much to blow you away...the amp and sub i had in there was so close to you it was almost too much swez on 11/8/2006 09:07:48 There are 3 basic categories in car audio product performance: 1. Products that meet quoted specs 2. Product tht exceed quoted specs 3. Product that do not meet quoted specs Legacy is definitely in the 3rd category. Here's how we know that fact: Voltage x Current = Power (In Watts) 14.4 x 15 = 216 watts (power amp draws this much power at Peak) All amps draw more power than they produce at the output, due to inefficiencies and heat losses. A 2 channel amp is about 60% efficient. 216 x .6 =129.6 watts of clean Peak Power. The RMS power of an amp is about 50% of Peak ratings. (~65 watts RMS) When looking at amplifiers, we are most concerned with RMS power. Continous clean power output is the benchmark we look for. Not Peak Power at very high distortion levels. In your case, a single sub and a clean 300 watts RMS should sound very strong in your Pup. A big budget is not required here, for that level of clean power. Before recommending any products, tell me about the present enclosure you have for that sub OK? 1. What style of box is it? (Sealed, Ported or Bandpass) 2. What are the internal dimesions of this box? (Height,Width & Depth?) Can you give a ballpark budget number here? Swez PS Yes, have been into Car Audio for over 8 years (at CK) now and Pro gear for much longer. If I don't know my stuff by now, it's time to quit and look for a new hobby and profession. ;-) danny122786 on 11/8/2006 15:00:16 i have a sealed box 10 inches deep and 16 inches wide and 16 inches high i would like to keep it 300 or less swez on 11/8/2006 18:35:31 That's a pretty large box for a single 10" sub! May I suggest a few good brands that will fit this need: 1. Alpine SWS-1242D 2. Infinity Kappa 124.7w 3. JBL GTO1204D The JBL GTO1204D is the best fit and probably the lowest price of the 3 noted and is fine in that size box. It's a 4 + 4 DVC, 300 watts RMS and your present box is a very good match. Here's a very good price for a sub of this quality: http://www.ikesound-car-audio.com/rec/3265-JBL--GTO1204D ($63.00) A matching amp to this sub would also be JBL. Have a look at this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-06-JBL-GTO301-1-II-MONO-AMP-300-WATTS-ll-GTS-GTO_W0QQitemZ110053485218QQihZ001QQcategoryZ18797QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem ($115 Buy Now) These are excellent prices for the quality level of performance you will get from this kit. 115 +63 = $178 + S/H. That leaves some room for power cable, inline fuse and any small hardware with $$ to spare. How's that sound to you and your budget? Swez danny122786 on 11/8/2006 22:56:34 it was a 12 inch sub danny122786 on 11/8/2006 22:57:57 hey thanks for all the help swez on 11/9/2006 08:09:08 Yep, that's what we do here Danny! Swez PS When you are finished with your purchases and such, care to donate some spare change to CK?
