IR Receiver for DVD

I bought a new car today that came with Invision Revolution DVD players in the headrests. The headrests come with IR Headphones. Since my son sits in the back seat and is too small to use headphones I bought a pair of small amplified headphones that I wanted to velcro onto the underside of the carseat so he could listen to his dvd and I could listen to my music upfront. Is there a way for me to build or buy a simple IR receiver that I can plug headphones ro connect in some way to the amplified speakers ?

Hummm, interesting idea here. Never thought about IR based speakers in a vehicle, but this idea has merit. (No wires, signal pickup via IR stream) and a receiver with amplifier to power outboard speakers is the jist of your question?

May I suggest contacting a few of these vendors and see where they can direct your efforts:

A cheap and easy method might be to consider a way to secure the provided headset near the childs head and adjust volume so he can hear it and be "mesmorized" by the video content. A child's hearing is considerably better than an adult, so this may indeed work.

Don't for get a good supply of "Binky's on a string for this boy's carriage seat as well. If the Binky stays put, there is peace in the car.

Warning: (Unsolicited Parental Lecture pending)

My parents practiced a very low tech method of entertaining the troops on long car rides. (3 very rambunctious boys under 6) They had us counting cars, trucks, calling out colors, picture books and such. (It worked!) If we got out of hand, Dad slapped the hell out of us... NOT RECOMMENDED!!! (Today, this method will put you in jail)

My wife and I talked and played all kinds of games with our duette of our two hyper-active kiddos. Yes, it took patience and a good degree of imagination, but we read books, told them stories and kept them well entertained and had lots of laughs/tears as a couple., Try to come up with inventive stories that kept them very involved/bored in the stories until they pooped out and fell asleep. Soft cuddle toys and cold chews are great for cranky kids that are cutting teeth. Don't forget the "blankie".

This low tech approach is called... "Parenting". You know... talk with them. Entertain them and when all else fails to calm them down, a quick swig of Benedryl, will put them out and peace is once again found. (End lecture)

PS I feel for a new parent as it's a big departure from adult living. However, they hear our voices and in most cases, that's enough to tone down the din. This phase does not last long either. When a child is past toddler-hood, their learning curve is straight up as are the parents' curves. Worst case, when the child is not going to calm down, get ear plugs for yourself and that will give some relief from a squalling baby. BTDT.... it works!

PSS If this child is a very fussy baby, take some classes on parenting and join a support group as needed. We has 2 ADHD kids at one time. When one went off, the other one soon followed. "Honey, get out the Benedryl... it's time for a break". Ahhh, peace and quiet has finally returned to the drive. "Look at our little angles now, sleeping like babies... ain't that great"?

99% of all video systems have a seperate audio out, whether it be RCA or 1/8" jack. There should be a connection on the back of the DVD player. If the DVD is built into the screen in the headrest, call the manufacturer of the monitors and request an installation manual or have them tell you how to remove the screen from the headrest to see what type of audio output is available. Then it is as simple as running another wire down through the seat and to your amplifier or other external device. The only problem with IR transmission is that it is strictly line of sight, and most now days are in stereo which means that the left and right channels are going to be different frequencies, and you would need two ir recievers to retain stereo sound. If you are still wanting to do something with IR, you could modify a set of headphones by removing the speakers and using the speaker wires as inputs for an amplifier. Most vehicles with aftermarket video have infared headphones AND a FM modulator so that the audio from the movie can be played through the factory stereo system.
