Hi guys, Alpine 9847 HU, Punch 75HD pushing two old 12" Alpines in sealed box in series (=8ohms at the amp). The subs and amp were set up LONG ago with a coil to block out mids and highs since the amp doesn't have any crossover capabilities. 1. Do they even make those old coils anymore? I know they are super inefficient and since most amps have crossovers on them they might not be as available now? 2. Would this be better than that old coil? http://cgi.ebay.com/BOSS-Active-Subwoofer-Crossover-Network-New-in-Box_W0QQitemZ160044154771QQihZ006QQcategoryZ79840QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 3. [In case I'm too cheap to scrap the whole system and get a new mono block] what should I take into consideration when thinking about buying a crossover network besides adjustable frequency levels, inputs and outputs? I've loved the old Punch amps but maybe it's just time to let them go. Replies (5) swez on 10/27/2006 09:34:45 Yes, that unit will work and it also looks like it may have a Line Driver circuit, (Signal preamp booster) in that package as well. If you buy it, use the 90 Hz., filter setting for these subs. No reason to scrap that amp either. It's a good amp and can always be used for full range or Mid/Highs later. Yes, coils and caps are still used for full range systems and Components. The only drawbacks are insertion losses (<1dB loss) and low slope rolloff curves. (-6dB/oct slopes VS a -12db/oct slopes) swez PS Your HU has a sub output section and Bass Engine filters available already. These features can be used instead of buying any crossover devices. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-X5snvHKyHms/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&tab=detailed_info&i=500CDA9847#Tab http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/Manuals/500/500CDA9847.PDF There is limited information on this feature on pages 13 and 17 too. As for subwoofer filter selects, use either 80 or 100 Hz. Print out a copy of this HU Install and Users guide so you'll know what to do and have a copy on hand for future references too. How's that for a cheap fix? SMILE jrwsound on 10/27/2006 13:02:14 Awesome! When I bought that HU I asked if that SW out was full range or not and he said yes which is right but it sure would've been nice if he would've taken the time to explain further that those filters were available. Guess I should've asked more questions. You rock! swez on 10/27/2006 13:16:54 Thanks for the kuddo's and your recent donation too... "YOU ROCK TOO" JRW !!! Yes, try working out your HU settings from the menu side of that HU. The details on how, are a bit light in the manual. Just do some experiments until you get the SW output programming the way you wish. Cheap and loving it too, (More like.... very Froogle) Swez MrBrownstone on 10/29/2006 05:43:07 frugal END SPELLCHECK Froogle.com is a faction of Google. Finance + Google = Froogle swez on 10/29/2006 08:13:59 Frugal is correct... but I just happened to like the spelling and looks looks of "Froogle" as in froogle.com. Easy to remember and use as a search tool too. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
