car audio wiki

Hey all,

I'm just throwing this out there to see if people would be interested. I've set up a Car Audio Installation wiki and am looking into getting hosting for it. The question is, would people be interseted in contributing to it. I've only done one car audio installation on one car (am thinking of doing it on another) So I'd need user input for all other makes/models.

So reply if you'd be interested in contributing to the cause. (Your make/model expertise might be helpful too.)

Thanx,
Josh

What is a wiki?

In case you don't know -- A wiki is a community edited webpage. So everyone can add their two cents.

A good example: http://www.wikipedia.org/

"So are you wanting install pics or information?"

Yea, install pics and instructions -- It'd be more focused on how to get stuff in and out of your car without damaging panels etc. Where the screws are -- the best places to run wires, etc, etc

I think that because there are so many forums with FAQs it would be quite the task, so unless you were making it an 8 credit college cooperative class, it wouldn't be worth the time.

Also, in the audio industry, there's a lot of 'voodoo' technology that a number of sites have misinformation to go with good information. This makes it difficult to administer and to agree on content.

However, if you wanna do it, it's up to you. Without a commercial interest, there isn't a whole lot of reason to make the effort. Kinda like trying to build a 70,000 seat football stadium.

I don't see the harm in this post as SPAM per-se. It's an interesting idea for certain. But building a useful data base with any valuable content, is a big effort.

There are many good and bad sites out there now that already have much of this content available to Installers. Sure, most charge a fee for access to their sites. But many Pro Installers also have reference books for such details too.

Frankly, I don't have any useful opinion or inputs about this post. If Walt or other Golds have issues about it, it can easily be supported or deleted.

Wiki (wikipedia.org) is something a lot of people do with their websites.

When I worked at a web firm, one of the value-added options to the hosting plans was that your users could start a wikipedia-typed encyclopedia. This is like the FAQ section of many forums, but edited by the users.

Like I said, I have no problem with this type of arrangement, and the post isn't spam. However, it's a topic of discussion that equals creating a brand new forum from scratch. Wiki only works when countless people submit their entries, and over a very long haul, it is edited to great heights.

Instead of Frequently Asked Questions, an encyclopedia-typed entry would be made. Like this one:
