I am having a problem with my amplifier. I have a Kicker KX1200.1 amp connected to 3 12' Solobaric subs in the back of my Tahoe. I was driving one day, and after I was forced into a hard stop, the box in the back of my truck slid back, and a minute later my subs stopped working and I smelt a burning smell coming from underneath my seat where the amp is located. I checked out my wiring after I pulled over and I noticed that the the neg/black speaker wire actually pulled so hard at the box, that it broke the negative side of the terminal connection. The positive terminal stayed intact as did the positive wire. I also pulled out the fuse by the battery and it looked okay. I haven't replaced the terminal on my box as of yet, but I was wondering if I blew a fuse at the amp or if this incident fried my amp b/c I noticed that the amp power light did not light up as usual (This was right before I removed the fuse). Any help would be appreciated. Replies (3) swez on 08/20/2006 09:18:38 It sound like this shift in the sub box may have caused a short at the outputs of your amp and damaged some internal parts. That "burning smell" is the tip off. It might be best to have the amp/subs looked at by someone who knows how to troubleshoot electronics gear. Yes, check the fuses in the amp first and replace if any are open. But having a "qualified tech" look things over is a very good idea. Are the amp and subs still under any warranty plans? If yes, get your paper work out and handy as you may indeed need some warranty service here. Good luck and welcome to CK, Swez brianrice2005 on 08/20/2006 15:42:55 Thanks for the advice. swez on 08/20/2006 20:30:52 Sure... wish it were more simple to troubleshoot an amp, but a simple bench test with a power source, (12 volt car battery/charger) an audio signal source (I-Pod or Walkman) and a known good speaker would be in order. However, If the amp lights don't come on, internal circuits have been damaged. Off to the repair shop, is the only option. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
