JL 12W7, MTX 9512, or Solo X 12

Ok in a few weeks im planning on getting some money, about 2 or $ 3,000 and Im thinking about upgrading my system. What i know is that JL W7s are good, but are really expensive. I read that they are very good with SQL and SPL. Then come the MTX 9500's. Which are expensive, but much cheaper than the W7's, and are supposed to be better at SQL and SPL. Then there are the Solo X which are also expensive, but have more power than the other 2. The thing about the Solo X is that i think they are more for SPL instead of SQL. so what im thinking about right now is going with some MTX 9500's in 12" models. I have a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado ext cab. is there Any way i can have 2 of these subs under the back seat??? or no. I don't think so, because there isn't alot of room, but what about one??? if not then i guess the back seat will have to go. but can anyone give me suggestions on what would be good? I don't care about the back seat, but what i do need, is for the passenger seat to still be able to lay down. so would 1 of those 9500's be good, or would you all go with 2???? thanks in advance.

Hey thanks victor, but i know pretty much all that stuff. ask me any questions, and i'll try answering them to help out. I have a 1 ferret capacitor, im using 4 AWG wire right now too.

OK, we see you want a high powered sub and want SQ performance in this truck. A single sub and a strong amp will do a lot for building a strong bass engine.

This truck does not have a lot of extra space behind the front seats unless you flip up 1 rear seat for your sub enclosure and mount your amp(s) on the rear wall of this truck.

Also, we need to carefully consider power draw of all amps used in this project. You may need to upgrade some wires, BAT and perhaps use a H.O. ALT to feed everything enough power. Please answer the following questions:

1. What sub amp are you planning to use?
2. Do you have a Mid/Highs amp here too? (Make & Model #)
3. What is the max output of your ALT? (105A is stock, your's may be higher as it's a full size truck)
4. What is the CCA rating on your present BAT?
5. What type of music do you listen to most?
6. Estimate the largest sub enclosure you can fit in the rear part of the cabin with 1 rear seat folded up or the lower seat removed. (H x D x W)

That info will give us a good snapshot of your options for this application and we can then go deeper into your pre-install planning.

Hey Swez how's it going? Well Of course i want sound quality, but I NEED A KICK FROM THE BASS, or maybe even several haha. Well the thing is, lets say the sub is only made for SPL, im guessing it will bump, but not too musical huh? well ok im thinking about removing the entire back seat, and probably put the amp on the back wall, along with 2 (15 ferret capacitors). Right now i do have a stock alternator, but im thinking would just getting another battery, and an isolator for each battery be good enough? or do i need to do something with my alternator???

on to the questions now.

1. Well depending on space, if i put 1 12" MTX 9500, i would get it a dual 2 ohm and probably just get a Kicker Mono block, i think its the SX1250.1 or ZX1250.1. This amp will run at 1250 Watts RMS at one ohm, so this would work with this set up. If i go with 2 of these subs, i'll probably get 2 Dual 4 Ohm subs, and honestly i haven't looked at the subs for this setup, but i would get something stable at 2 ohms or 1 ohm.

2. Yes i do have an amp for my mid's and my highs. Its not being used for that right now though. It is a Kicker KX300.2

3. My alternator is stock, and it is a 95, so probably about 105 A

4. Not sure what BAT stands for

5. Well if im in my Truck all i will pretty much listen to is Rap. For ex, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Busta Rhymes, some 50 cent, stuff like that. oh this is a good bass song, but i can't ever listen to it right now because it shuts off my amp. Mike Jones - What Ya Know About.

6. Well for the measuring part lets answer this first, i can remove the entire back seat, becuase its all just one long seat, but i do need one thing, for the passenger front seat to be able to lay down. I mean it doesn't have to be all the way down, but i don't want the box to TAKE UP THE WHOLE BACK SEAT where u can't move on the front of the truck.

The availibility of space is right now not a major concern as i would see it,

But the availibility of power is ofcourse what bothers me ..

The KX300.2 + the sub amp + the stock electricals will demand a lot of power, as I see it, the bare minimum Alt you need is a 180amp. a higher CCA battery, and a Big 3 uprgade. no 15farad caps would make a difference if you dont have a sufficient power source.

If you want that powerful a bass system you will definitely need electrical upgrades..

and anyways there is no big difference in going from 600wrms to 1200wrms except for a 3db gain. which can be acheived by other means like sound damping and aptly designed enclosures too.

Agreed! A well designed ported enclosure with a well matched sub and amp will do a very good job of pumping out the bass. By using an efficient sub and ported enclosure, you can get the same or more bass with say the SX 650.1 as you would with a sealed box and an SX1250.1. (A more efficient way to get the boom, without killing your electricals) Yes, you can expect SPL BASS in the 140dB + range with the SX-650.1 and a good sub.

As for sub choices, am sure we can find a few cheaper subs to get the job done with less cost than JL's W7, MTX 9500 or the Kicker SoloX. All fine subs to be sure, but as noted before, JL is very expensive, MTX is not cheap and Kicker's SoloX take a huge amount of space and power.

Battery: CCA = Cold Cranking Amps (This is often on the BAT sticker) In this truck, I would expect a 600 CCA rated BAT as stock)

Forget the Capcitors! They don't add up and do not deliver what most of the HYPE says.

As for sub options, a single 4+4 DVC that can handle a clean 600 watts RMS and does well in a ported box, will do the job and not demand a huge box.

I agree with both of you. Now i know a guy who can get items cheap, because he deals with manufacters, and i don't know if this is possible, but he says he saw it himself. Is it possible to have 2 Solo Baric 12L7's sealed down firing under the back seats??? and he said if we do this, we would probably get a 1500 Watt mono block that is stable at 1 ohm. for this load i would get 2 dual 4 ohm subs??? any suggestions. thanks in advance.

swez on 08/12/2006 10:32:41
See your other post for details.

I would strongly suggest the 2+2 DVC's here. You'll get a net load of 2 ohms and the ZX-1500.1 is stable at 2 ohms. That means 750 watts RMS per sub and a perfect match for the L7 series subs.

i've got a 12 inch solo x that needs a cone that i'll sell you for $100 plus shipping if you are interested. i sold the cone because i wasn't using it. they are around $100 brand new.

cecilio87 on 08/13/2006 23:53:27
whats the RMS wattage on that sub? plus another question, so a cone would cost about 100, so i would have a 12" solo x for about 200 and some? well im planning on getting 2 9500's so i think i would need more power than just 1 twelve, but whats the RMS on it and maybe i'll think about it. thanks

UKinstaller on 08/14/2006 09:22:35
the sub is 2500w RMS. it needs some major amplification to get the job done. i used to have a kicker 2500.1 that matched up with it perfect, but sold that too.

you could move it with a JL 1000/1, but you'd be better off having a couple of them.

damn thats alot of watts. so do you think one of these will sound better than four S12L7's? Because i can get Four S12L7's for about 700 bucks. but maybe put a picture of the sub, and that really sounds like a good deal man it would be alot of power for a good price. thanks

cecilio87 on 08/14/2006 13:44:05
oh was it a dual 2+2 or dual 4+4 thanks
