Suggestions for speakers running off the HU

Hey everyone. Doubt anyone remembers me, but you helped me out big time about a year and a half ago with my first time system install.
Anyways, I need somre more help here...

My girlfriend drives a '95 Jeep Cherokee. Her stereo sucks. She wants me to install a new one. She doesn't have a whole lot to spend and I don't want to do a big install in there anyways, so I was thinking I would just replace the HU, and her door and tailgate speakers, and run them off the HU. Now, I realize it isn't going to sound nearly as good without any real power going to the speakers, but I'm pretty sure there are some real efficient speakers out that that will run off the 20 or so RMS that the HU will put out. I was hoping someone would have some suggestions. As far as I can tell, both the front door and tailgate speakers are 5 1/4". I was hoping to maybe find some 2-ways that come with a crossover to maximize ease of installation and for sound quality. I'm just not sure if there's anything like that that will run off the power output from a HU.

Well, any help would be appreciated.

pioneers seem to run fine off HU power. they don't require a lot of power, and don't sound THAT bad, and they're real cheap, too.

as far as component speakers w/ crossovers, totally unnecessary in this situation. NO components sound decent without an amplifier, because they are designed to be amplified. does the jeep have infinity sound?? if it does, you'll want to bypass the factory amp because it has built in crossovers and won't run full range to the door speakers.

and i think the door speakers are 6.5 inch, but they could be 5 1/4. the tailgate speakers are usually 5 1/4.

you can get all this done for real cheap. just make sure you factor in around $40 for all the parts for the install (dash kit, wiring harness, speaker harnesses if you want to simplifiy the install). should be real easy though.

unless it's the jeep dash w/ the single din radio in the top center of the dash. those are a PITA, you have to drop the steering column to get those decks out and most of the time you have to file out the opening of where the radio is to fit a cage because the dash kit on those mount funny. see if you can find a picture of her dash and i'll let you know what you're into.

If your not planning to add an amp to them later then it would be best to find an highly efficient set that doesn't require much power.

Crutchfield.com is a good place to browse for what will fit. Check out the reviews and "take them with a grain of salt". Later, you can shop around for the same set at another place for a better price. Depending on where, it may or may not be better as it will require harnesses for a easy/quick fit. Crutchfield gives all the hookups for free.

Later if you want to add bass, a simple powered Bazooka tube (8" or 10") will integrate nicely. Did this one in my sister's Jeep. She loved it, until she sold the vehicle.

Simple and cost effective. To get deeper a real world budget will be needed.

Pioneers, eh? Any specific model? Never been a huge pioneer fan. I always kinda considered them down there with Jensen or something.

About the door speakers, I'm just going by what Crutchfield is telling me, it says they're 5 1/4. Is there a chance it could be incorrect?

And yes, it is the one with the HU up in the center of the dash. I have heard you have to make some modifications, but I really haven't gotten that far into this yet to determine what exactly is needed for that.

I would also never buy anything from Crutchfield, except for a dash kit or wiring harness. They are overpriced on most things, IMO. I usually just use them to check what will fit.

And how does a bass tube connect? Does it come from a pre-amp, or is it like a High level input or whatever it's called kind of deal?

Oh also, is there any easy way to tell whether it has the premium infinity sound or not?

Hello Descent,

Yes, I remember you from 2003 or so. Good to have you back.

Since this is your g/f's car, work within a reasonable budget. (G/F's come and go) So, why do a $500.00 INSTALL here, until you both make it a long term commitment? (IMHO)

Pioneer, Kenwood, Polk and several other brands make some very high efficiency speakers for this 5-1/4" format. No need to spend a lot, to get much better than stock performance here.

Yes, Crutch is a very good resource for many things, but they are mostly full retail. There are many good online buying site you can look at for the best deals. Once you find a set you like, then buy.

About a sub, yes, a powered sub is a very good option. The Bazooka powered series 8's or 10" powered woofer systems are low cost, adequate power and easy to install. You won't need RCA's from the HU and can simply splice wires from the rear speakers to the high signal input side of the built in amp. (This model also has RCA's for input if your HU has a sub out or rear channel RCA's only.

This system is very efficient and does not need a huge power hogging amp either. It will deliver about 65-75 watts RMS to a 2 ohm, DVC sub and draws about 7A's of current at full power.

How's that fit your plans?
