Other than crimper/cutters and a headache... what's the best way to strip #4g and larger wire?

I want quick and easy preferably...

thanks!

4 gauge i can strip with regular strippers using the cutting tool with no problem at all. anything larger, you'll want to look into some heavy duty cutters and just cutting around the wire instead of "stripping" it.

they make specific tools for them but they are $$$.

yeah, that's basically what I already do, it's just a pain to sit there and snip around the wire... I figured maybe they made a little spiral cutter or something simple for large gauge wire.

oh well!

box knife works well as long as you keep yer fingers away from it....

So does an xacto knife... I was just wondering what everyone else uses, and if there's a better way than I already know

I use a razor blade. Just cut into the insulation to the wire and go all the way around. Simple, cheap and inexpensive.

I use a very sharp razor knife with a good handle for grip and control. Have used wire strippers too, but they have to be sharp and you just spin the tool around the insulation until it separates.

As for cutting heavy wires, a pair of 8-10" linesman pliers will usually do the job. On 1/0 gage, I found a pair if tree pruning shears works great! Used the by-pass type sissors, not the anvil/blade type.

If you wind up with too much wire exposed after removing insulation, a sharp pair of sissors do the job well. Just cut a few strands at a time, until you get about 1/4" of exposed wire.

For crimping heavy gage wire termination hardware, I use 2 pair of vice-grips. One to hold the lug tight and the other to crimp down each tab on the connector hardware. Works very well, even on 1/0 termination hardware. A perfect crimp, every time.
