Extra Speakars

Hey guys.........i was just wondering if i could run an amp to two extra speakers other than my four 6.5" inch speakers that are powered through my head unit. I plan to get two 6by9's and put them in a boz and put them in the back and run a two channel amp to them. Would this work?
Thanks

Yes, most amps will do OK with 2 ohm loads. However, depending on the amp you have now, you may find a few issues, not to your liking:

1. Less power to front speakers
2. Rear speakers overpower front speakers
3. No fade control (F/R) speakers

What amp do you have now? (Make & Model #) Also what speakers do you have now and plan to add in this manner? (make & model #'s too)

Why use 6x9's when you already have four 6.5's? They will generally produce the same sound. If you really want to upgrade, use a amp on the front 6.5's to improve sound over the HU's output. Or, if your just trying to add some bass, run an amp to a sub(s) to accompany the 6.5's.

I have to agree. Your gonna put some extra cash and time and effort into putting in some 6 x 9's? What are you wanting that you don't have?

See the thing is is that when i put my top down my subs are cut off and all i hear is my trunk rattling......what i am wanting is alot of power from speakers when my top is down so i dont have to worry about trying to feel the bass when the top is down bcz i dont want to blow them. I dunno it was just a spratic idea......but what if i just ran a 2ch amp to the front 2 speakers? (which can handle 60 watts RMS at 4Ohms)

Thanks

Ahhhh, this is a horse of a different color... a convertible pony?

In enclosed vehicles, (non-convertibles) we have a somewhat contained sound space. But, in a convertible, we have an open sound space subject to road noise, wind and traffic. Even with the top up, we have a very leaky sound space at best.

Yes, you can amp mid/highs in front and rear and have a sub too. Unfortunately, with such a large sound space to fill, it's like listening for a mosquitoes' farting, in a wind storm. Not so easy huh?

All kidding aside, about the best you can do here, is to have strong amping to the main interior speakers. That will allow you to hear them well enough in general driving conditions. At highway speeds, it's pretty much a wash out. All that audio sound, is literally going out the window.

There are some things that one cannot achieve in this world w/o extraordinary measures. This is one of them. We either enjoy our tunes and run with the top up or enjoy the wind in our faces and forget about the tunes. More often than not, we cannot have our cake and eat it too. (Unless we are willing to exploit others who have to share our proximity) = MAD people around us.

Ever seen a sound system (or cup holders) on a horse? Me neither... there must be a good reason for that. Have never met a horse that actually enjoys Rap or Hip Hop either. I guess a cowpoke can enjoy tunes on his horse via an I-Pod or MP3 player and headphones. (But in a car, that usually means an instant ticket)

Not sure what else to suggest at this point. Some things just cannot be done well. But... we'll try anything at least once. Ya game? hehe

6 x 9's will not do much to increase your bass in a convertable.

One suggestion that most will not touch is the use of some Aura Bass Shakers. Though they do not produce bass, they add to the sensation that there is bass being produced through vibration.

Added under the drivers and passenger seat (if needed), it is possible to attain, to some degree, what you are looking for when the top is down. You could switch them off when the top is up and bass is present. Being fairly efficient, it is possible to even run them off of HU power.

I know I might catch some ridicule off this one, but it is good at times to think out of the box as this can open real possibilities.

I have never had anything aginst the bass shakers other then that you need an amp to run them. Seems like wasted power to me?

Bass isnt the problem because i have 900 watts rms in the back goin to my two alpine R's @2 ohms.....there really isnt a problem except i just want really loud mids and highs when my top is down....so i guess i could just amplify the two front speakers or heck why not all of them? But thanks for your guy's help this is a great site

I would add an amp to your existing speakers or upgrade them before adding the 6 x 9's.

Yes.... I would suggest the same thing,,,, get a decent 4 ch amp and power all your existing speakers with it. That should do the trick.
