have 2 mtx 12's wired parallel to an alpine mono block class d amp, after about 90 sec of hard pounding the amp shuts off, its not over heating, if i reset the HU (turn off then on) the amp comes back on and the same thing happens again, please help. Replies (4) greg311 on 08/5/2003 11:01:15 i did a little research, those mtx 12's are 4 ohm speakers, if i hook 1 if them up to that amp then its at 4 ohms, hook 2 speakers up then its 2 ohms and if they are 4 ohm speakers wouldnt that create a problem? I definately dont want to cook the amp. I was told that if you run that much power at 2 ohms to 4 ohm speakers they will overheat or something of that nature. is this info correct? Swez on 08/5/2003 11:22:11 Since this is a 2 ohm stable MONO amp and these are 4 ohm SVC subs, the only things that will cause the amp to shut down are excess heat, poor power and ground wire connections or gain on amp is set wrong for HU used. If you run these subs in parallel, you'll get a 2 ohm load. But if the gain setting are not right, the amp may shut down due to over current or heat issues or poor wiring connections to amp... mostly ground... Got to have a solid ground to bare metal and then to amp. CHECK YOUR WIRES!!! If this is not an issue, you may need to install cooling fans for this amp to cut the heat build up. Some amps have heat sinks that must have adequate air flow to keepthe amp running under extream conditions. If the heat sinks cannot cool proprerly, the amp will shut off. A side note... maybe the HU is the cause here. You may be losing 12 volt REM voltage (HU supply) for some reason and this will also shut off the amp as well. Ground the HU to a good bidy ground and see if this corrects the issues. Swez Pinch on 08/5/2003 12:07:33 I am not sure if this would cause the amp to shut off or not, but good power and ground connections are also important under the hood. If the battery terminals are caked with oxidation, the best gold connector in the world isn't going to help ya. It is not a bad idea to make sure the battery connections are clean. Pinch greg311 on 08/5/2003 12:15:15 i had 1 xtant sub running off of this same amp with no problems what so ever, the power and the ground wires are done correctly. the amp is not overehating, in fact its not even warm when the speakers shut down so I am assuming its the gain. does that mean that i wont be able to crank up the volume? the speakers play fine at low volumes but when i pump it up they shut down. the connection to the battery is fine as well, no corrosion at all.
