http://money.cnn.com/2006/06/23/news/companies/gm_buyouts/index.htm You know, I may have mentioned that I'm not a fan of GM, Furd or Dodge, but how do you lay off 40,000 people? What the frick were they doing? Picking each other's butts? I understand when you merge 2 companies, or you have a 25% cutback in revenue you may need to cut off 25% of your staff, but GM is making the same # of cars they did last year!!! There was no merger, no redundant jobs, no serious technological advancements (like robots & telecommunications systems) so how exactly does this happen? It's almost contract renewal time for the UAW and GM is offering buyout to it's targeted employess to get them off the payroll. The numbers range frrom $30,000 to $150,000.00 per employee in the buyout, based on seniority, salary/hourly wage rates and job functions they need to reduce. Yes, this is more about factory automation as well. Robots don't take 30 minute coffee breaks, 2 hour lunches and generally work about 5 hours in an 8 our shift. With well planned F/A, production levels can be well over 80% up time. Try getting that from most humans and they might explode. Swez pigwiggle on 06/23/2006 21:15:59 Like swez said, unfortunate union contracts. An interesting fact; GM, on average, needs to charge $2,000 more per auto than Japanese manufacturers just to pay union negotiated perks. They are in a very poor position to compete. MrBrownstone on 06/26/2006 14:26:26 I understand a lot of what was said, however, 25% of your staff? Robots aren't taking that many jobs...although they've shortened the number of repetitive tasks drastically. What were these people doing? and who's doing their jobs now? GM has lost marketshare, but not the # of cars it produces. $2000 per car in bennies...man, they need Ross Perot to get back involved. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
