Hey guys. I'm back again... So I've decided it's time to upgrade from my Phoenix Digital 1000 Watt 4 ch. amps to something a little higher quality. I am building a new sub box that will allow me to mount my 2 Kicker SX 650.1's and hopefully three 4 ch. amps on the back (facing the back door). I am looking for something with at least 75 watts x 4 at 4 ohms (higher than a 40A fuse rating). I have a total of about 51" of width to work with, so it's going to be a tight squeeze given the amps I've been looking at. I would like to have the controls on top of the amps, since I will be making a cover to mount flush with the amps, but this is not necessary. Also, one of the amps I found had the wires coming out the bottom. This would also be a nice feature to help provide extra room. Here are the amps that stood out to me after a couple hours of searching around Ebay: 1) http://cgi.ebay.com/KENWOOD-KAC-8452-4-Channel-AMP-800-WATTS-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ9734503672QQcategoryZ39741QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 2) http://cgi.ebay.com/Soundstream-EGA4160-amplifier_W0QQitemZ9734998384QQihZ008QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 3) http://cgi.ebay.com/Soundstream-EGA4220-220W-x-4-Amplifier-4CH-880W-Amp-RB_W0QQitemZ9734813209QQihZ008QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 4) http://cgi.ebay.com/Soundstream-EGA4220-220W-x-4-Amplifier-4CH-880W-Amp-RB_W0QQitemZ9734813209QQihZ008QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 5) http://cgi.ebay.com/HIFONICS-ZXi6406-Zeus-ZXi-6406-Car-4-Ch-Amplifier-680W_W0QQitemZ9735053471QQihZ008QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 6) http://cgi.ebay.com/JBL-GTO75-4-4-CHANNEL-750-WATT-CLASS-A-B-AMPLIFIER-NEW_W0QQitemZ9733691838QQihZ008QQcategoryZ4950QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 7) http://cgi.ebay.com/KENWOOD-EXCELON-KAC-X541-Multi-channel-car-amplifier_W0QQitemZ9736273029QQcategoryZ39741QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 8) http://cgi.ebay.com/MA-AUDIO-HARD-KORE-800w-4-3-2-CHANNEL-CAR-AMPLIFIER-AMP_W0QQitemZ9735955222QQihZ008QQcategoryZ4950QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 9) http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-06-MODEL-MA-AUDIO-M500XE-4-CHANNEL-800-WATT-AMP_W0QQitemZ9734278889QQihZ008QQcategoryZ4950QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I know this is a long list, but they all pretty much fit my needs. Please feel free to suggest any other comparable amps. Thank you ahead of time for your help!! -Ian- Replies (14) Victor on 06/18/2006 23:02:41 Do u wanna buy a refurbished amp, no issues if it has been done by a reputed tech.. and if its done by the manufacturer nothign like it, Hifonics and Soundstream are two top of the line manufacturers and you can definitely buy those. JBL and kenwood are solid amps too, MA audio is a moderately rated amp manufacturer .. Victor... lilschtive on 06/18/2006 23:28:15 i choose #1 dkh on 06/19/2006 17:51:17 I have had alot of luck with these USAcoustics amps. My 4 channel is model 4060 and it has got upwards of 70 watts X 4 across 4ohm resistance. I got it used at the p-shop and it has been fine. My other amp is usacoustics 2200 to drive my subs its 2 channels by 200 watts unbridged and it moves too. Just my opinion from my own experiences. p-shop offered me 30 day exchange on them if they dont work but the guy hooked ehm up instore before i bought them and they sound fine and havent had one problem with them yet. Can't say the same for the new alpine i bought and finally returned because it kept going into protection mrp-f240. cheers cybersailor420 on 06/20/2006 22:21:25 Thanx for your input guys. I have heard of US acoustics before, never looked into them much. I've actually only heard of them on this site. I have no problem buying refurbished stuff. I have never had a problem with anything I've bought refurbished so far. Hifonics was looking like the best option to me, but I'm worried about making them fit on my amp rack. I'm still not sure what to pick. Anyone else have any input or suggestions? Thanx again. -Ian- swez on 06/21/2006 10:27:20 The Kenwood, JBL GTO, SoundStream and yes... US Acoustics are all fine amps. The main question is with all these amps, power consumption, efficiency and fitment on your amp rack design. When running subs, Class D amps are notably more efficient (20% or more) than any 2/4 channel amp on the market. If you are planning to run subs off a 2/4 channel amp, they will tend to draw more current for the same power ratings (current draw) then Class D counterparts. FYI: Class A/B amps (full range, 2/4 ch) amps are 50-60% efficient. Class D amps are generally MONO amps and efficiencies range from 80-85%. Swez cybersailor420 on 06/21/2006 20:28:06 I already have two Kicker SX650.1's to run my subs. These new amps will be for my mids and highs. I'm not sure exactly what i'm gonna be running, but it could end up being alot. Don't worry about the power consumption aspect, I'll be taking care of that. I have already done the big 3 upgrade w/ 1/0 and have an optima yellow top. Swez, I noticed you didn't mention Hifonics. Do you think the others are better options? I'm having a really hard time choosing... And for some extra info, my cd player is a pioneer premier 860. I'm not sure whether to stick with the crossover and eq in this cd player, along with whatever comes with the amp; or to not worry aobut the crossover of whatever amp i get and just get an external one, like an Audio Control or something. so many decisions... swez on 06/22/2006 10:36:51 HiFonics is not a bad amp choice. However, since they merged with Crunch and Maxxonics, some say they have lost some degree of quality and cheapened their products. I don't know if this is 100% fact or not. None of us has the time or money to test each amp, speaker, subs and what not out there. That HU model has a lot of nice features. However, the motorized face panel and menu driven EQ may be a bit cumbersome to navigate. Also, the more mechanical functions there are in a HU, the more likely it will act up over time. If you like what you have now, just continue using it. If it gives you problems after warranty has expired, look ahead for future options. For this strong of bass in your ride, it's going to take some pretty stout mid/highs and amping to keep up with the bass. Yes, you can use a pair of strong 4 channels here to bi-amp your system is you wish. However, tweeters are often very efficient in quality Component systems and the crossovers used, tend to attenuate the tweeter power needed to reach maximum clean output. The rest is often bleed off to internal circuit protection shunts and wastes power. What are you planning to use for your mid/highs speakers at this point? Swez cybersailor420 on 06/23/2006 00:42:38 I am going to be using Pyle 5-1/4"s and 6.5"s for my midrange, and Pyle pro bullet horns and power acoustic tweeters for my highs... and i have a lot of them. My system is still similar to what was described in a post several months ago where everyone was listing there system. Anyways, I think that this amp may be the winner: http://cgi.ebay.com/Soundstream-EGA4160-amplifier_W0QQitemZ9734998384QQihZ008QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Let me know what you guys think. -Ian- swez on 06/24/2006 06:17:33 Yes, this is a very good, strong amp option. I see the bid ended with a "Buy it Now" bid. Pyle makes a lot of gear. Some of thier Pro gear is useful. However, better test what you have now to insure they are up to the task of such a strong amp kit. Swez cybersailor420 on 07/6/2006 00:51:55 Just wanted to let you guys know what I ended up getting. 1 of these: http://www.millionbuy.com/souega4120.html 2 of these: http://millionbuy.com/souega4220.html I just got these in the mail and they look awesome! Exactly what I wanted. Now I just need to get myself to spend a couple days redoing everything, once again. Good thing I love doing this stuff! Here are some pictures of past systems of mine and some others that I've worked on. You can kinda see how I learned along the way. I'll be sure to put up pictures of this next system too. I think this one is really gonna turn some heads and blow some minds/ears! http://tufts.facebook.com/album.php?aid=54401&l=68a1c&id=1701198 http://tufts.facebook.com/album.php?aid=54108&l=57c63&id=1701198 -Ian- swez on 07/6/2006 08:26:34 Pretty wild work here Ian! Swez cybersailor420 on 07/6/2006 10:34:03 haha! I'll take that as a complement ;) swez on 07/6/2006 16:27:52 It was Ian... ;-) Very creative ideas... One thought though, sometimes less is actually more. Swez "Old Man Audio" cybersailor420 on 07/6/2006 18:34:30 hahaha! .... yea, i've heard that one before. most of it is just for show. i like seeing people's faces when they look in my car :p Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
