I was really interested in this JL Audio 18 W6 Subwoofer w/ Dual 6ohm coils. Here are some specs: Fs (free-air resonance): 20 hz Qts (total speaker “Q”): .384 Qes (electrical “Q”): .402 Qms (mechanical “Q”): 8.74 Vas (equivalent compliance): 9 cubic ft/ 254.9 liters Xmax (linear excursion one-way): .500 in Effi ciency (1W/1m)*: 88.8 db Sd (effective piston surface area): 182.6 in2 Re (DC resistance): 11.04 (in series) Znom (nominal impedance): dual 6 ohm Pt (continuous thermal power handling):500 Recommended sealed enclosure 19x19x12.5 w/ 1.75 cubic ft volume And here is the box that i found: MATERIAL-MDF THICKNESS- 5/8" WIDTH-22'' BOTTOM DEPTH-26'' TOP DEPTH-16.75'' HEIGHT-15.75'' APROX. AIRSPACE- 1.8 CUBIC FT PER CHAMBER Would that box do well? I know the airspace is just fine, but can i do better? Is it worth getting an 18'' sub? Will the bass be "too much" for a BMW, or will it just kick really hard? Any inputs? Thanks a bunch! Replies (11) ttocs on 06/11/2006 12:57:39 I just wonder if the box will fit or if you will have to build it in the car? staticaddict on 06/11/2006 15:03:08 I did the measurements, and it should squeeze right in. swez on 06/11/2006 15:37:54 The box is appropriately matched to the sub. However, with this large a woofer, you may have to brace the box well internally. Do you mean this one? http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/15_18W6_BDS.pdf What amp are you planning to power this sub with? Swez staticaddict on 06/11/2006 18:32:39 Yes that is the subwoofer I have. For the amp, I havn't gotten there yet. I only have the sub right now. The box, if all goes well, I would order. I'm taking this process as slow as possible. When installing in my 4x4, I made some crucial mistakes that costed me money. As for the amp, I hav not gotten that far. I don't want to spend TOO much on amp, just enought to fit it well. Would i need a bigger amp? Would this not be enough: http://cgi.ebay.com/JL-AUDIO-e2150-2-CHANNEL-AMPLIFIER-220W-AMP-NEW-2005_W0QQitemZ9737039223QQihZ008QQcategoryZ18796QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem swez on 06/11/2006 19:26:45 The ideal amp for this sub would be the JL 500/1. It will give you 500 watts RMS and match this sub perfectly. The 2nd choice would be the JL 250/1. This should be cheaper and you'll only lose 3dB of bass SPL. (Not enough to fret about) See what you can find in your price range off e-bay if you like. Swez Victor on 06/11/2006 19:36:05 or I would suggest a JBL GTO 600.1 II staticaddict on 06/11/2006 20:29:35 Is this the JBL?:http://cgi.ebay.com/JBL-BP-600-1-Mono-Sub-Amp-600-watts-true-power_W0QQitemZ9738387615QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting I'll go for the cheapest. The 250/1 is around $240, and thats not that bad. Can you give me some input on 18''s? Anyone have any expierence with them? Were you pleased at the outcome? BgDustin4 on 06/11/2006 22:16:15 18's are low low bass something like 20-40 hrz it depends on what type of music u like to if u have it a 20 hrz not many songs at all will go that low i like 18's and dislike them just as much it low thunder bass thats about all i know but i would not cheap out on the amp that is a nice sub jl one of the best staticaddict on 06/11/2006 22:47:32 I would mostly listen to rap, bass all the way. Then i usually adjust my HU settings for it to work with rock. At least thats what i did with my 2 10''s in my truck. swez on 06/12/2006 11:30:15 That JBL 600.1 will do a nice job for your sub. However, since you have a 6+6 voice coil set. this amp will deliver about 450 watts RMS @ 3 ohms. Not bad at all. We use 18's for deep lows and sub-sonic frequencies in Pro applications like live sound and night clubs. However, in car audio, it should work well enough between 30-80 Hz. If you like the deep bass tones in Rap, you'll love this sub. Swez staticaddict on 06/12/2006 19:54:28 alrighty! Wow you guys were a great help. Without you, i wouldn't have known what amp to get.
