I'm planning to do a custom install utilizing fiberglass to create a sub enclosure. Then smooth it out with Bondo (or similiar). I don't want to paint it, as it won't really match the rest of my interior. I'm thinking of doing vinyl over the fiberglass/Bondo enclosure. Anyone have any advice? How well does the vinyl stick? Replies (9) swez on 06/9/2006 15:46:03 With the right glue, it will stick very well. You may need to but a base coat of epoxy based paint on the enclosure, before gluing with something like 3M's Super 77 spray adhesive. One thing about vinyl, it will stretch well over curves and corners. however, dry cutting/fitting your pieces requires some thought and practice when working with irregular shapes. Bearman Ash on 06/9/2006 17:01:53 There is a spray that when applied correctly resembles vinyl and usually comes various interior matching colors. This can be found at automotive paint supply shops. This can be a bit simpler as you won't have to sand as much when you use vinyl. When doing vinyl it will show almost any surface imperfections of the object it is covering. swez on 06/9/2006 20:04:51 Ash is spot on with his comments. You can get vinyl sheet goods at most fabric stores. (WalMart Millinary dept?) They come in various colors, textures and not overly expensive. Just make sure you buy at least 10% more than you need to allow for cutting/shaping waste ect. Swez bearman on 06/10/2006 18:43:16 Ash, any additional information on the spray? Does it come in an aerosol can or do you need a paint gun? Also, any help with a brand or industry name would be appreciated, so I can ask for the correct item. Thanks for the help guys. Ash on 06/11/2006 18:15:12 It is an aerosol spray which should make it easy to apply. The only con is the grain required will depend on the individuals application experience. Much like that of painting. I'll look it up as I think (no promise) I have the name. BgDustin4 on 06/11/2006 22:22:54 i think this will tell u every thing u know about the covering sub boxes http://www.splbassx.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2657 and about the spry stuff never herd of it but i think u would have to have a gun made to spray something that big in grains Ash on 06/12/2006 04:02:02 Okay found it with a correction. You will have to use a spray dye to the desired color. As far as the product like I said it is an aerosol. It is 3M Rocker Panel Spray. It is of a high build texture type coating that can be sanded and painted. bearman on 06/12/2006 10:55:50 Thanks for the help guys. Nice link Dustin. I'm in the planning stages at the moment. I'll post some pictures, on Sounddomain, when I get started with the build. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
