Your amp gains on the sub channels may not be set properly to HU RCA voltage. This will cause the bridged amp to overload and behave as mentioned.

What make & model #'s are used here? Amp, HU, sub & full range speakers?

i have a aiwa cdc-x227 hd/american legend 2 4 channel 1000w amp/punch xlc 10" sub/ optomus full range speakers that are directly hooked to my hd/ rca plugs out of head unit into amp for the sub.

The manual:

http://www.us.aiwa.com/default.asp?page=ownerManual&action=browse&model=310

This unit specs note 2.2 volts at RCA outs into a 10,000 ohm amp input impedence. Some amps are 20,000 ohms inpedence.

To adjust amp gain, start at 2.0 volts and work your way down to 1.5 volts. HU tone controls are "flat" (No boost, no cut) HU volume control at 80% of maximum output.

Which Punch model number sub are you using here now? How is it wired to amp?
