lower volume when stepping on brakes

by strathorn   Front Page * FAQ Forum * Archive Index   Prev :: Next

My stereo was stolen. I replaced the stereo. Installed a cap to try to prevent this problem. I step on the brakes then my system lowers the volume then after letting up on the break pedal it goes back up?
Please help

Where did you ground your amp? Brake tail light ground?

If yes, move your ground to a new location. Lighting harness grounds are small and fine to handle low power. If your amp is connected to brake grounds... (yeah its simple) but not good enough. Pick a spot near the amp, lift your carpet, sand off a small circle to bare metal and drill a 1/8" pilot hole in the center of that bare spot.

Now, use a #8 x 1/2" self-tapping sheet metal screw. Be sure to use an appropriate eyelite type connector for your ground wire. Now ram the screw in tight with your drill driver and cover the spot with a dab of silicone sealer to prevent rust. Don't over torque it or you'll strip the hole and have to use a larger screw. If the #8 screw goes in too tight, (won't seat properly) enlarge the hole a wee bit and try again.

Replace the carpet after the silicone cures and you're good to go!

Caution: When predrilling that pilot hole, know what's on the underside of that panel. No holes in fuel/brake lines, gas tank or wiring harnesses please.

PS If using an after market HU, make sure you have a good body ground there too. Harness grounds are not always adequate. Same basic techniques as noted above are employed here.
