Hi,
I just installed 6.5 inch component set in front and 5 inch mid in rear in my Honda Del Sol with 4 Channel Amp.
When I turn the volume to zero and I hear continuous " DDDDDDDDDDDD................" sound from front Tweeters and it also happen when the volumn is small.
I tryed to adjust H.U. that all to rear but the DDDDD... still occur from front Tweeters
Pls advise what I should do. I ask the shop to install it to me.

Thanks

Hummm, that is an odd one. I could understand a constant "Hiss" from the tweeters, but this one is a bit perplexing.

Is the noise still present when the engine is off and the HU/amp are playing only off the battery? (ACC mode)

Since a shop installed it, take it back, point out the problem and let them resolve it. It may be as simple as incorrect amp gain settings or something in the grounds between HU and amp. (Engine noise in audio signal lines usually mean poor HU or amp grounding)

In rare cases, the amp power line may be positioned too close to the ignition module and picking up spark ignition noise. Here, the power line must be moved to eliminate noise.

Good luck Hong Kong,
Swez

PS I think you are the first poster from Hong Kong, to this site. Welcome to CK!

Thanks Swez,

Yes, you are right that I should take it back to the shop but I have exchanged the head unit by myself since I found a nice Sony HU with 2 RCA output with front AUX in for IPod. Therefore, the shop will not care me anymore and they did a bad workmanship and I plan to fix it by myself.

The noise still exist when engine is off. And I have tried to turn all the signal to rear speaker but the nosie still come from front tweeters.

Therefore, I plan to check all the wiring again and would like to get advise in here before I start my work on this Sun.

Thanks very much.

Check to see if the HU ground is installed to a harness related ground or other. It should be mounted to bare metal like the firewall or floor pan. Same thing with the amp. It needs to be mounted to bare metal as well. (seat belt bolt or floor pan often work well)

The other concern hre, the HU preamp outputs have a given voltage rating between 2.0 - 4.0 volts. The amp gains need to match HU preamp RCA outs.

Finally, the power cable for the amp should be well separated from the RCA signal lines. (at least 2 meters apart) If all wires are bundled in one area, engine noise is often noted. RCA's can pick up other electrical noise from inside the car as well. You may have to move them around to get things quiet again.

Good luck and let us know what you find out,
Swez

PS Was the noise present before you installed the newer Sony HU?

Thanks Swez,
Today double check again and yes, the noise is coming out when engine is running and its disapper when I switch off the engine.
Then, I adjusted the Gain in AMP 1/2 channel and then I can eliminate the noise but the volumn control become less senstive. Then, I adjust the 3/4 channel Gain as 1/2 channel and now problem fixed.
One more question, besides the Gain control there have frequency control, I should set it at middle or not. And there have AMP fliter which I can set off, LP and HP, I should set it to LP. Am I right?
Many Thanks !

Max,

The filter can be set to "off" if you have no subwoofers. If you hear the speakers breaking up on low frequency signals, set the HPF between 40-60 Hz. The rear channels have smaller speakers and you may need to set this HPF a bit higher. (60-80 Hz.)

If/when you add a sub & amp, the HPF for your mids/highs will be set between 80-100 Hz. The sub amp LPF will need to match this setting when installed.

Yes, when you adjust the amp Gains, it changes the amount of input signal from the HU needed, to achieve full power from the amplifier. The "GAIN" control is not a volume control. It simply matches the HU output signal from RCA's to keep the amp from overloading pre-maturely. Yes, the sound is lower at same HU volume control settings. But, the amp will not go into heavy distortion as we dial up the HU volume either.

Well done Max!

Hi Swez,

Thanks for your help. Today, I spend an afternoon to re-wiring the RCA cable since that POOR audio workshop run the RCA / AMP power cable together and now all the abnonrmal sound was gone.

Now, I have a question would like to consult you. My car is a small Honda Del Sol and I have a Rogers 4 channel AMP and have Focal 6.5 component speaker in front. I set the Tweeters in A Pillars and facing each other and find the voice is good now but it makes me feel lack of base. I am thinking to put a slim 6 inch woofer with AMP under the seat or buy a pair nice 5.25 or 6.5 inch speaker in rear ( behide the seat ). And I would like to consult you to have your opinion.

Thanks !

Max
PS. After suring this web site, I have confidence to handle the audio my myself, DIY is good not only save money, and you will know we also can do a nice job better than those ' expert " audio shop.

Good job Max. The power and RCA's can be run together in some cases, but it's always best to run them on separate sides of the vehicle.

There's a big difference between "Professional" Installations, (they get paid to do the work) and "Expert" installers. (Know what they are doing and get paid well too)

If your tweets are a bit too much, check your crossover for the Focals as they may have a tweeter attenuator option. A 3-6dB cut in tweeter output may help balance out your front door Mids.

Many guys with smaller vehicles, just use Components in front and a sub in back. If your 4 channel amp has a LPF feature, can bridge the rear channels, set LPF at 80 Hz., and install a decent 4 ohm sub back there. A well designed 8-10" sub enclosure should do the trick. If space is very limited, a pair of 6.5" woofers can be used. If you go this route, use a pair of 8 ohm woofers.

Comments?

Thanks Swez,

The Focal Component has no attenuator option, there have only a selector to select Live or smooth, since I installed the tweeter in A-pillar and I followed the manual and set to smooth.

Yes, my 4 channel Amp are bridge and I have borrow a 8 inch sub woofer with enclosure to try the effect on Sun. However, since Del Sol space is very limited and I prefer to put a pair of 6.5 inch woofer in the original rear speaker position. Although, I believe the 8 inch woofer will sound better.

I have another limitation since the original rear speaker space is very narrow and from Del Sol web site it is saying that the deep of the rear speaker cannot exceed 2.5 inch deep. I have tired to put a 3.5 inch 6.5 inch speaker but it does not fit. Or I may need to put some spacer and cut the cover to fit it.

Now, I will check the 6.5 inch woofer and keep you posted.

Thanks a lot
