I have 4 mb quart 8" subs that I am plannin on running with a memphis 500 watt class d amp for the mustang. The car currently has the stock mach 460 system which includes a 6.5" free air sub in the rear deck. I have been thinking about trying to make a box to hang under the rear deck where the hole for the current sub is. I don't think it would be too hard to mount them all facing one direction(which way?), but will it hurt anything to have them on different sides of the box?

Im pretty sure as long as the volume all adds up to the right amount for each sub you should be sweet!

different sides of the box, will mean collission of sound waves from different direction, of different phase.

It would be hard to figure out how these waves behave when they interact,it can iether give u a very good bump over ertain overlapping frequencies, or cant give u a void in certain if there is cancellation due to phase difference.

Also there are possibilities of over lapping waves of slight difference in phase and this can give u elongated bass, i mean not a clean reproduction of the recorded bass.

I would prefer going with all the subs facing one side.

OR,

if they are mounted on opposite sides, there will be a physical phase difference of 180' and then if u wire them 180' out of phase as in reversed polarity, then you can use this.. .

The scenario will be like this , the lower subs will be firing inside the box, while the upper subs wil lbe firing outside the box, the upper subs will get a good added push because of the waves from the lower subs.. then during the negative cycle the upper subs will move in and the lower fire out.. this will work in a similar way....Isobaric loading...

At any point of time there will be the same amount of air enclosed in the box.

Agree with Victor here.

Sound cancellations are a definite problem to consider here. If you can build the enclosure, and hang it under the rear deck panel, fire the subs to the rear bumper. This will net all cones firing in 1 direction, all on the same acoustical plane.

The other option is to fire all subs upward, through the rear deck. Again, all subs are firing in the same plane. However, your bass will be a bite muted by not taking full advantage of cabin gain effects available to trunk support.
