Amp Settings For JL 500/1

Hey guys I sold my JL 500/1 and 06S10l7 Kicker sub to a buddy and offered to help him install amp and sub in a 2.4cf ported enclosure. This equipment is going into an 02 Mittsubishi Galant SE. I have only used this amp to drive a sub in a small sealed enclosure and never had to use the infrasonic Filter settings. Do I set the Infrasonic freq to the tuned port freq of the enclosure and does infrasonic freq and filter use affect amp LP Filter Freq settings? Also, what would be the best reccomended sub firing arrrangement in the trunk of this car (rear seats do not fold down)? Thanks for any help.

The Infrasonic filter is set to match port tuning of the enclosure. It is basically a high pass filter that blocks lows that can otherwise damage a sub that is getting high powered signals, below tuning frequency. If unsure where the port is tuned, a safe bet would be to use 35 Hz., as your starting point. Then, feed the sub some low frequency test tones (30-60 Hz.)and watch the sub cone for erratic behavior. If it sound clean and the cone acts normal, you're in the game.

Sub aiming... yes, in most trunk mounted subs, place the box against the rear seats and fire toward the rear bumper. You can move the box closer to the center of the truck and determine if any changes are noted. You'll know when the box is in the sweet spot. The bass will be full, robust and louder.

Thanks Swez, I will start with some specific settings on the 500/1 let me know if something doesn't look right to you.

infrasonic 30Hz
Q 1.6
center freq 60Hz
boost +3dB
LP filter 12dB
Filter freq 65Hz?

Thanks Swez!

that means you are only sending 30-60 hz to the sub. As long as it sounds good then great but it seems like a small signal to send.

The LPF is set too low. Normally, we shoot for 80-100 Hz. A 12dB slope should be fine here.

The 60 Hz setting is for your Bass boost might be a bit too high here. Most amps have fixed boost set at ~45 Hz. The "Q" of 1.6 is fine and can be adjusted to suit vehicle acoustics. If too boomy, try reducing the "Q" settings and just listen for the best results.

The Infrasonic filter looks good as is. (30 Hz.) Factory setting is a 24dB/Octave slope for maximum woofer protection. Nice feature!

Thanks guys, I'll push the filter freq up to 100Hz and listen for any needed adjustments. My buddy is only running the 500/1, kicker ported and door speakers powered by head unit.
