i have a japanese built amp( assumed japanese built since i bought it in japan, and also its second hand so no manuals) rated at 50watts x 2rms. i also hav a hi-fi 12 inch dvc sub with 30hz-2000hz frequency and 400w max.
can this amp handle the sub? to what frequency should i set it to. how much bass boost ? will it be bad for the amp if i set its gain more than half?. ive tested setting it to highest and it played loud enough (for me) and clean but i think it will toast my amp sooner or later. bass boost available is up to 18db. i know may amp is under powered but im stuck with this. FROWN, pls help me adjust proper settings. oh , my HU is kenwood rx-380 with cd player (also bought in japan). amp is used for the sub only.

NEWS FLASH, pretty much all amps are made in either Japan or Korea. Even the 'made in the US' amps are 99.99999% Japanese or Korean parts...so basically, they are really only assembled in the US.

You'll really have to give us more information about the sub and the amplifier. Is the amp bridgeable? If so , at what impedance?

Just a generic sub? Doesn't have a name?

a little more info on the products might be helpful. Whether or not two products work together depend upon the installation, but first, we need some info.

yes, the amp is bridgeable but i dont know the impedance. it has no manuals when i bought it.
"MGT power
RMS 50w x 2 mosfet stereo power amplifier"
is written on top of the amplifier. i dont even know what brand it is.
it has bass boost control 0-18db, a gain and, (low pass)frequency adjustment 35hz-250hz. other specs, i dont know. the sub is konzert kw-3000m. dual voice coil 4ohm-4ohm is written on the magnet. i mounted it in a sealed box, 1.5 cuft.
i apologize for the "not enough" information given. but im hoping you could help me. i just need to know the proper/safe settings on the amp since the sub is 400watts.

What is the fuse rating on the amp in question?

fuse rating is 25A

OK, that's a solid 50 x 2 watts RMS @ 4 ohms, 150-200 RMS bridged to MONO @ 4 ohms.

The sub mentioned, is not the perfect ohmic match for this amp. To get the most from it, a 4 ohm SVC (1 voice coil) would be adequate. However, you can run this amp in stereo, one coil to each channel. That is a safe bet, but 100 RMS is about all you can expect.

That HU, cannot find the specs on it. What I do find, is all in Japanese. If it has RCA outputs for a sub amp, set the gain at midpoint for now and if you hear high sub distortion when playing it loud, increase gain input sensitivity until it sounds clean.

As for LP filter, set that to about 80-100 Hz. If in Japanese, set to a point where only bass and kick drum are heard. Go real easy on the bass boost too.

thanks very much, swez! and also to mr brownstone. i really appreciate your effort in helping amateurs like me. you guys rock!!!

If you do run the amp in stereo and have one coil to each channel, wouldn't this risk damaging the sub?
Because at times isnt the stereo left signal different to the stereo right signal and therefore two different signals would be going to each voice coil? Thus risking distortion or damage to the sub ??

Ideally it does, i mean, theoritically your argument is correct, it does, but in practically use I have seen the sub survive and and play decent bass ( tho not that clear, crisp, low, good quality one ). but it does play and survive for long.

Though , I myself have never suggested any of my clients or ever on CK to do it. I would prefer advising to buy a new class D amp, or a new sub to match the ohmic load,

I also saw a post on using a single coil, and not wiring the other one, although i have seen many people do it, and the subs play and survive, but I dont suggest that too..

thanks guys but ive done this a long time ago, to one of my friends' system, and up til now its still playing decent sounds. system is for a daily driver though. not for pro or competition stuff.....
main goal here is just to achieve the closest match possible for the amp and sub mentioned. ill stick to swez's advise...SMILE.
