Im having a problem with my JL Audio 500/1 amplifier, I am running 3 JL 13w1v2 8 ohm speakers. My amp is makeing my speakers do a wineing noise and they extend out to their fullest excursion point then pop and my low ohm light comes on then. What could be causing this? Is my amp messed up or are my speakers blown? Any help would be most appriciated. Thanks! It sounds like the amp gain is set too low and the amp is maxing out too soon. These are 8 ohm SVC's. They can all be wired parallel for a net 2.66 ohms. That is safe for this amp. Also, check all subs to make sure they are working properly. If one sub is starting to fizzle out, that can cause problems with your amp too. Swez rocker_topper on 04/15/2006 23:05:09 well as far as i can tell the subs are fine. I press down on the cone and it sounds as if they are fine but i dont know if this is an acurate test or not. Also my amp sparks really bad whenever i connect or disconnect the positive and the negative wire for my speakers. Could this be a problem? Its never done this before. Thanks! swez on 04/16/2006 09:37:13 Indeed, think you do have an amp problem going on here. If there is an audio signal coming into the amp when we disconnect speakers, there will be some sparking noted. However, if no audio signal is present, (RCA inputs removed) there should be no sparks. If there is, then the amp needs to be looked at by a qualified JL tech, (if under warranty) or someone very familiar with amplifier repairs. Have you inspected your amp ground lately? It needs to be connected to bare metal like the floor pan, trunk floor etc. When playing with power and ground wires, best to remove the fuse at BAT. Now, there is no power to amp and safe to remove wires. Swez PS Can you get your hands on a Volt/ohm meter? Some basic diagnostic tests can be run with one of these. Can walk you through some tests if you have one handy. rocker_topper on 04/16/2006 10:29:15 It sparks wether I have the RCA cables pluged in or not. And its more than regular sparks too. Its like enough sparks to start a fire in my truck there are that many. It shouldnt be doing that should it? ttocs on 04/16/2006 11:40:07 who did yer wiring? I think ya need to double check it all.... sparks are bad...... swez on 04/16/2006 15:52:26 Better pull the fuse on this amp until it's been looked at by a tech. It sounds like a power supply and rail voltage issue gone amok. Have it looked at ASAP, before you do have a meltdown. Swez rocker_topper on 04/16/2006 16:27:07 ok i will have it looked at monday. The shop where i bought it will be open again monday. If it is messed up it should still be under warranty so ill see what i cant get them to do for me. Thanks Swez i appriciate all the advice man. Cant wait till i get it working agian. It was massively loud while i had it. swez on 04/18/2006 10:43:55 Yes, it's a great amp if you can manage the price. Usually almost bullet proof when installed and set up properly. (The gain control setting is the key) Who installed the amp/subs? Swez rocker_topper on 04/18/2006 16:42:35 I installed the amp and subs but i had everything looked at by an approved JL audio Dealer/Technician and they said it was perfect. BTW they are sending everything off under warranty and JL is supposed to rebuild my amp and give me new subs. swez on 04/18/2006 19:45:16 That's good that they will honor the warranty. The unfortunate part, you'll be w/o an amp and subs for some time. When you get it back, makes sure you read the install manual part that notes the proper gain setting techniques. Also, what HU make & model do you have now? I'd like to review its specs and aid you in the proper setup points for this amp. Knowing the HU specs, we'll get it spot on this time. Swez rocker_topper on 04/19/2006 17:15:36 i have a crappy little sony xplod HU right now. The model is the CDX-F5710. Here are a list of some of the features it has that i have been able to find. Mabey they will help. FEATURES: Flip down Detachable Face with user changeable background LCD display colors 4 x 52W watts Peak 4 x 23.2 watts RMS CEA 2006 compliant Plays CD, MP3, A-Trac3 Files + XM and AM/FM 7-BAND EQ BBE MP maintains great sound quality, even on mp3 compressed audio files DSO, EQ7 CD/MD Control Dynamic Soundstage Organizer CD Text XM Ready SSIR-EXA tuner 18 FM/12 AM presets F/R/Sub Preamp output w/HPF & LPF Flip-down Detachable Faceplate 13-seg 7 color LED Display High-pass and low-pass filter spectrum analyzer Auxiliary Input clock Wireless Card Remote included swez on 04/19/2006 18:39:23 Oh I dunno about crappy... seem like a boat load of useful features and a lil "eye-candy" just for kicks. The part I was looking for, is the RCA output voltage. I see from looking about, it's 2.0 volts. File that piece of info on a sticky pad and when you reinstall everything, you'll know where to set the gain control. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
