Hey ya'll. Some good info being posted on your site. I have been lurking for a few days and I guess I've finally gotten the nerve to ask a few questions. I basically desire to build a sweet system in my new truck. I pulled some old components out of my old truck -here they are: Sony HU (CDX-C860) Mobile ES Sony CD Changer Mobile ES Rockford Fosgate Punch 60.2 Prestige 4 Channel Amp Solobaric S10C 4 olm The 4 channel I am certain is a POS. I had the kicker in a q-logic form in the back of a ford explorer. I sounded like crap for what would have to be a year. When I pulled it I discovered that the back of the box had a break in it.. there was piece of plastic causing some major vibrations. Anyway... what I would like to do with this truck, unless somebody has better ideas, is as follows: Purchase some good component 6.5's for the front (install tweeters flush in the dash) I plan on building an enclosure for the solobaric and putting it in the back under the seat. Pushing it with the RF 60.2 bridged. I believe this sub is in good shape. It looks fine -I just need to build this simple box to check it out. I was considering purchasing the mtx thunderform made for my truck, but just am not sure if I want those mtx speakers. What I would really like is another s10c to match the one I have! I have read about speaker names on this site that I have never heard of! Anyway I was thinking about putting the money into the component front 6.5's, 3 way 6x9 in rear doors, new 4 channel amp. But like I have heard said in other topics... buy the best you can afford now -cause you'll regret it later... I wish to do this. I am really happy that I pulled the hu from my old truck... I was just going to sell it with all my stuff in it... The changer was rarely used and I have 3 mags for it! Anyway... sorry to ramble... if anyone has any good info on this particular truck it would be greatly appreciated. I may consider getting an awesome 4 channel now and upgrading the RF 60.2 to something awesome later when I possibly add another sub. My main concern is good quality/price buys while staying fairly high end. Thanks - jt - Replies (11) deepseajt on 07/31/2003 21:37:47 Well I guess I didn't read enough of the faqs. Sound Quality is my main concern. I want to build a system that is top notch SQ whilst still having the power to impress. Any comments on what would be a good 4 channel amp. I talked to crutchfield -yeah they are expensive, but they have an MTX 6304 on sale right now for 199. They guy I spoke to said its a pretty good deal... Close out model -they bought the last of them... they have about 400 left. Anyone heard any pros or cons on this amp? deepseajt on 08/1/2003 08:36:50 Ok... questions. I am completely new. I have no loyalty to any particular brand. I am looking for awesome clarity and resolution. SQ all the way. Anyone have any idea on the best yet reasonably priced 6.5" components for the front of this truck? Any recommdations on dyna mat? Should I just take all the carpet out and mat everywhere? Again... will this MTX 6304 serve my purpose... or should I go bigger? I wish to drive the components in the front and some 6 x9 3 ways in the rear doors. I want to drive them well! Thank you guys... just trying to get started. I learn fast though! - jt - dflock on 08/1/2003 09:09:06 jt, I few bits of information for you. As you are looking for 6.5" Components, I just purchased these components: http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/CDT_Audio_Components.html Made by CDT Audio. Normally they are $300 a set, but there is a factory paint error (nothing big at all) so they are 1/2 the price they normally are. I was very impressed by these speakers and they mount easily in most locations. This set of speakers will save you a good $150 - 200. Which you could then put into new Sub Amp or another sub woofer and amp. I like kicker solos and comps. They are a big boomier than most subs. Meaning, more SPL (bass) then SQ. You may want to look into other subs. Sorry, I don't know anything about MTX subs, or the enclosure, but it would probably save you time on the install. Hope some of this info helps. Derek deepseajt on 08/1/2003 12:36:54 Thanks Derek... I like what I am seeing on the CDT's. I am off to some stereo stores to see what they have and listen. I am off the rest of the day. I am tempted to push the buy now button on those cl-61's. Can't help but see those cl-641's though. Any pro's or cons to getting 3 way comps instead of 2 ways? Not sure if I can put the 4"'s in my dash and mount the tweets exterior high. Other wise I guess I would be putting the 6.5"s in the rear doors and the 4" in the front doors. Anyone have any input on just staying with 2 way comps and throwing 6x9's in the rear? Or going with 3 ways as mentioned above? Will I get a different/better freq range? Thanks - - jt - ttocs on 08/3/2003 17:11:19 you do not want to split the componant speakers(2 or 3 way). They are made to play as one speaker if done right, but utilize the advantages of each indivudual size speaker. You want them as close as possible. Doesn't the ram have 6 x 9's in the front doors as well? If that is the case you can put the 6.5, and the tweet in the door easily. You would just need to make a baffle to mount them to. Swez on 08/3/2003 17:18:44 I have highly recommended that CDT CL-61a deal to many and several did buy them sight unseen with all very favorable reports in return. Sure you can spend more $$ but these are a very quality piece of gear. As for 2-way/3-way Comps... if the midbass driver and tweeter are well matched by design and have a quality crossover, that's much easier to work with than 3-way Comp system installs. Not that a quality 3-way system isn't good too... just one more driver to mount and hope you can find space for everything. Once you have that issue settled, then a decent 4 channel amp is next. There are many good brands to choose from. Some you may have heard of, others will be new to you. Just depends on how much you wish to invest here. Say more and we can all chime in on options in the price and power range you want. Subs... yes, a larger amp and perhaps a 2nd matching sub if you like. Really depends on how much bass power you want and space for subs. Lots of great products out there too. May I suggest a Class D MONO sub amp here. These are highly efficient and cost less due to the way they are designed. Not inferior to Class A/B amps in performance.... but generally much cheaper per watt. Keep reading others who have posted here and the replies. You'll get a wealth of information on many topics as you do. Swez deepseajt on 08/4/2003 19:55:08 Thanks guys for all the info. I installed the my hu and built a quick box from mdf for the 10" solobaric (.66 cuft). BUT.. I just backed into a concrete barrier at the place where I work and put a big crease in my rear passenger side door. I am disgusted. It was entrirely my fault... but... I am still mad. It was raining and I was in a hurry. Anyway... the good part is it damaged just the door. I will be spending the funds to first get this fixed... then we'll look at some speaks! For now I am pushing some power to the factories... Hope they hold out! I ran large gauge speaker wire (it was all I had -monster cable home speaker) to them all so I just have to drop the new ones in when I get them. ttocs. Yes there are 6x9s in the front doors. You say I can/should mount the 2 way components in the same location? I thought I needed to get them separated. Rockford fosgate makes some 4 ways I think that are 6x9 and sounded pretty good to me. I will probably get those cdts when I get the chance though... Thanks for the help. Swez thanks for the help. Will keep reading and saving! - jt - Swez on 08/4/2003 20:35:03 JT, Sorry to hear of your accident and the good news is... sheet metal and plastic can be repaired or replaced.... it's just a truck... but you are ok right? That's more important than any vehicle! When you're ready to start the install process, we'll be here. In the mean time.. forget the anger about your door panel... it's done and over... anger won't change the results... just learn from the experience as there are worse things in life out there that will grab your attention as you get older. This is the "small stuff" that irritates all of us. Errr... squat happens! Swez deepseajt on 08/4/2003 22:05:21 Swez, You are so right -that is good advice. I was upset at everything coming down on me at once! Found out when I got home that I didn't get promoted... bummer compounded.... But then my 3 y/o little girl came up and gave me a hug -she was proud that she made progress in the potty training at day care and wanted to tell me about it. In an instant it put everything in perspective and changed my whole attitude... Man I never had it so good. Thanks again.. - jt - ttocs on 08/4/2003 23:05:12 thats funny and cool. You can easily mount the 6.5 and tweet in the door. I have done it countless times in fords that use a 5 x 7", I am going to do it in my ranger. If you don't have access to a router or jig saw, I might be able to make you a set? If you really wanted to spend the cash, you could get the 3 ways, and do kicks and doors. It would jack the price up a bit, but look perty kewl..... deepseajt on 08/5/2003 20:34:46 ttocs, I have a bosch jig saw.. and a router... I really like making stuff! Do I need to make a box for them out of a hardwood that fits in the door mount or just inset them in a piece of wood? I am not able to visualize what you are talking about constructing. I like the idea of the three ways but the price jack up wouldn't do me well. I will just stick with the two ways for now if the quality is as good as you all say it will be. I did see those rockford fosgate 6x9's and they sounded pretty good. Take 135w rms I think. I believe I have already blown the stock speakers. The left rear sounds aweful. I have the two channel RF pushing the two rear stock 5/4's. The amp is 35w rms x2 into 4 ohlm -I am pretty sure they are toast. All wired up though to throw some speaks in. I believe I have some power supply hum. I hear a whine in the speakers. It may be the old audiovox Premier amp I have running in three channel mode pushing the two front stock 6x9's and solobaric 10, or could it be that I didn't scratch a good enough ground? I used the seat mount bolts to ground with. Any ideas? I guess I should probably wait till I get some speakers in to chase it down. ttocs -got any pictures anywhere of a mount like you are talking about? Let me know... or send to jimterry@cox.net -Thank you immensly... - jt - Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
