Car Speaker Help

Hey guys. I have two Sony X-Plode speakers in the front of my car, and I've recently had an issue with them. When I have the CD player on, only one of the speakers will play music. However, if I turn the radio on, both work. I've checked the wire connections, and they seen fine.

Do you have any suggestions for me? I've never seen anything like this, and it's getting frustrating.

This is probably an issue with the CD player and its ability to share both channels with your HU (Radio) and internal preamps/amps. You may need something as simple as a good CD cleaner to clean the read lense.

Another possible issues, the reader is out of alignment and you are only getting 1 track read as it plays. That can be more difficult to repair on your own. It may need a Tech to re-align the laser reader beam.

The worst case scenario here, you may have a bad preamp in the CD player circuits that feeds the missing channel. If that is the issue, it's a bench repair by a qualified Tech or replace the HU.

Good luck,
Swez

PS If this is a factory stock radio, yank it and put in a nice Aftermarket model of your choice. It's 13 years old... time for better HU.

Thanks! It's a brand new HU, so no problems there. One last question, then: where can I find a CD cleaner? I looked on the Wal-Mart website, and couldn't find any.

If this is a new HU, take it back and exchange it for one that works. No need to clean or align a new HU. It should be correct, right out of the box. This HU could be defective, right out of the box. It happens... more than we'd like to believe.

Wal-Mart does carry CD cleaning kits. So would Beast Buy or Circus City.

FYI: Try re-grounding the HU chassis to fire wall or floor pan. (bare metal) The black harness ground is not always sufficient for Aftermarket HU's. A poor ground can also cause problems as you have noted.

Good luck,
Swez

Sorry to bother you again...

I tried the CD cleaning disk, but it didn't work. I'm going to attempt re-grounding it next. I've seen this done before, and have a general idea on how to do it, but I don't want to screw it up entirely. Is there a website I can go to get a walk-through on it, or should I just bring it to a shop?

Since this is a new HU, it's either miswired or defective.

Did you install this one or have a shop/other do it for you?

Taking it to the shop, would be appropriate if the shop sold or installed it. That keeps you clean on warranty issues. However, if you installed it, have the manual and can double-check your work well... then by all means, give it a shot.

The process is very simple. We take the ground wire (usually black) on the HU harness and ground it to "bare metal' either in the floor board or firewall. The OEM harness ground is not always reliable for Aftermarket HU's.

Finally, the fact that both speakers are working on AM/FM circuits, leads me to think the CD player has a defect, if it only plays on 1 channel. That is usually a warranty issue and return/swap deals are often honored.

What say you now?

Alright, thanks! I called the technical support line, and they said it was the player itself that was defective. They agreed to honor the warranty and exchange it for me. They of course said it wasn't the product's fault (it's an Insignia product), and that they've never had complaints about the HU. Go figure. -_-

Thanks for your help!

It's not unusual to get a defect from the factory. High production units are generally not tested at 100% units made. The sellers don't open nor test products either. The only way one finds out, is in cases like yours.... darn thing doesn't work right after the install is done.

Good luck,
