Since we're on the subject of subwoofers...

Okay my tax return should be arriving soon, and I've picked out an amp. Next I'd like to nail down a sub. I've been looking at the following models:
JBL 1204D - 300w rms, dual 4 ohm voice coils for a 2 ohm load, sealed box size = 1.0 cu ft.

Infinity Ref 1242, same specs as above except the design is optimized for a 1.25 cu ft box.

Another choice that I'm looking for some input on is this one:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-wmr9BJhGPyE/cgi-bin/Prodview.asp?c=3&g=520&I=107DB124DV&s=0&cc=01

I know very little about Polk, but this design is optimized for a smaller box (.88 cu ft).

Ultimately the sub needs to fit behind the seats of my regular cab Ram. All of them will fit, but a smaller box would allow a little more airspace in front of the woofer so that it isn't firing directly into the back of the seat. The amp is making 350 W rms at 2 ohms so it is a good match for any of them. I'd really like some input on the Polk, has anyone had personal experience with them?

The Infinity Ref series is a good low budget sub. The same can be said for the JBL GTO series sub mentioned. The JBL sub has a higher sensitivity number, which makes it ideal for low wattage amps.

Polk has made some great speaker products for many years. The Momo series is the flagship of their Car Audio line up. The db Series is their budget line of subs. Still a good product, but not as robust as say and Alpine SWR series sub, which can be had for under $125.00. The SWR series can handle 500 Wrms. The SWS series is also a consideration, if you wish to keep costs down.

What amp are you planning to use to power your sub?

I'm planning on using an Alpine MRP - M350, must be a leftover model because Crutchfield is selling them for $140, 200 W x 1 at 4ohm, 350W x 1 at 2 ohm. I'm trying to keep as low a budget as possible whilst remaining with reputable brands/products.

I looked at the Alpine SWS 12 in a DVC sub, and despite the fact that it matches with every other criteria, it has one flaw for my application - The mounting depth is just shy of 7". The Polk sits around 6", and both the JBL and Infinity are just over 5". My problem is that I have a fair amount of width that I can play with for an enclosure, but only a limited amount of depth. This makes the JBL actually the best choice in terms of Q-factor for the enclosure.

Good homework JB... The GTO series sub is your best option in that price range and quality.

Hi Guys, Been a while. I finally got the sub and amp installed last week. I am running the JBL GTO 1204D in parallel for 2 ohms presented to the Alpine MRP M350 to get the full 350 watts mono. The sub is in a home made box roughly 1 cu/ft, 3/4 MDF glued, screwed and sealed. I've been slowly increasing listening levels over the last week to break it in, and I gotta say, I love the set up. This sub/amp combo matches up with the US Acoustics 4065 and JBL GTO components/three ways I'm running in the other four locations perfectly. No more running out of steam at higher volumes, the depth and dynamics of the bass notes follow everything right up the the threshold of distortion (which is beyond my ear's ability to be comfortable for any length of time). In other words, my perect daily driver SQ set up, with enough SPL to keep me happy.

A well matched system here JB. Sounds like a winner and one happy camper added to the list of satisfied and content CK readers.

Enjoy,
