Do I need an attenuator?

So I just bought an DMP1 mp3 player. The manual claims that for the RCA connection to source "the acceptable input voltage of this circuit is 1-3v rms". First, I don't know what they mean by 'input voltage' as these are RCA outs. Second, how can there be a range for rms voltage; should just be one number, right?

Anyway, if the RCAs are supplying 1-3v out and my HU connector accepts only 1v in, do I need to attenuate the 1-3v signal? If so, how? What if I don't?

typically, you can have 6db (or in your case 4x) the input voltage and it won't be an issue. essentially, the voltage is regulated by the VOLUME control, and is not a constant.

If you have the player at the 'quietest' setting, it'll be 0 volts. at the loudest, 3v. If the voltage is too high, you'll just start to hear a lot of overload distortion.

The player doesn't have a volume or other internal attenuation setting. It is made to jack right into the HU or preamp RCA inputs.

Got a link to the manual for this one? What pages to look at and what are the output voltage specs for this device? There may be some sort of menu for setting the output voltage from the DP1 RCA's to the Source unit. That would be nice.

Also, does your HU have and AUX input available for this device? If yes, what is the acceptable input voltage range of the AUX circuit?

The trick here, is to match the DP1 output as close as possible to the HU input Aux value. (you seem to know that already)

OK, I found details and the manual for the DP1. It looks like the output voltage of the DP1 is 1-3 volts RMS. That sounds like it can alter voltage needs to AUX inputs on Source Unit within a given range, depending on the input impedance of the Source Unit Aux link.

I would just try it initially at low HU volume and see if you get a clean, undistorted signal. If you have heavy problems, then attenuators may be required.
