Does it make a big difference if your amps power supply is regulated? Say if your only hooking highs to it. Replies (1) MrBrownstone on 01/8/2006 03:51:59 Well... There is no such thing as an unregulated power supply...just tightly, and varying degrees of less tightly. What unregulated usually refers to is that the power supply is not very tightly regulated. Typically, a tightly regulated supply will allow the output of an amplifer to put out similar power numbers at all input voltages. Ex: 10.5V 100Wx2 11.0V 102Wx2 12.0V 108Wx2 13.5V 110Wx2 in all operating voltages, the amplifier put out very similar numbers. In the case of an 'unregulated' amplifier: 10.5V 78Wx2 11.0V 90Wx2 12.0V 110Wx2 13.5V 135Wx2 Basically, the unregulated (or loosely regulated) amplifier will vary the output of the amplifier based upon your car's electrical system. Matching your amplifiers to have the same type of supply will assure that at lower voltages you will be getting proportional output. The type of power supply doesn't have any bearing on what speakers you use, subwoofers, components, tweeters...only that you have more factors to manage.
