Smoke and sparks, well just a few, What's this black thing?

I have borrowed a buddies older Pioneer DEH-635, cd-player. Classicaly, something started emminating a thin stream of smoke from around where I had just pushed in my HU. I quickly pulled the POS lead of the HU from the Fuse Box. The in-line fuse is okay, there's 12V+ to the Red and Orange leads at the harness, ground is spiffy, errr.. I mean grounded. Nothing happens when I power on the Cd player. I'm an avid twe....tinkerer of electronic gizmos, and have taken the standard electronics class with soldering and IC repair... SO, I've examined all the components upon the PCB and have come to the conclusion that "I can just test out all the components and find the resistor/diode/capacitor/lead that shorted out!" Right? Trial and error and I'll eventually find what i burned up. eh? OH YES... What are the funny THICKER BLACK WIRES which seem to be grounds, near the harness inside of the unit? There are 2 of them, both leading nowhere, and are recognized by the symbol near them on the PCB of a White dot, with a curved Arrow drawn from it. Was there once a connection made here?? I presume, much like Ni-MH or Ni-Cd cordless phone batteries, there is a thin "fuse" wire which burns up and disconnects the batteries from eachother incase of accidental miswiring. Anyhow, I really want to get this CD player going, and I don't want to kick myself for paying someone else to fix it, its just electronic. Fo Real. Thanks Yall. Peace.

they could be rca outputs, or chnger outputs if it has chnger controls. Can you tell how many conductors are inside? My guess is rca's. They might be shorted out, that might have cause the magic smoke to come out...

nah, probably not RCA anythings... they both share one thing in common, which they are continious, checked with the continuity checker thing. they are both just thick wire, not stranded. Darn, why can't we have a HU repair manual or guide. Or maybe I just haven't found it. Thx Tho.

solid wire? That is not normal....

Could you get a pic?

Glad you have a background in electronic troubleshooting. That will help a lot!

Hard to say what may have gone awry here... but could as simple as a shorted power feed wire inside the harness or internal blown fuse/power supply feed in the HU.

I would first double check your harness to HU wiring. If those 2 black wires are grounds (most likely) and not connected to a solid body ground, the only ground the HU will get is from the RCA lines or maybe and extra harness ground. As you said, they could be AUX phone or alarm connections and not needed.... but without an install diagram, dunno.

If you have the notion, pull the HU apart and have a look inside for damaged components. Probably a small trace in the PCB fried from too much power or shorting. If you have a power supply and test gear... at least you can fugure out why the HU is not turning on. Once you get that resolved, you may be home free.

Tricky getting those tiny HU packages apart as many are crammed full features and little space to work in w/o removing lots of extranious devices and daughter boards. I would concentrate on the power supply section of the HU for now though. Hope you have a bright light, a good magnifying lense and lots of patience.

Keep us posted to you rfindings OK?
