Unbelievable, but the equivalent SPL of the little earpieces is 110 to 120db!!!

From what the article reads, the main reason is that there's no shielding like the earmuff typed headphones, and since no outside noise is blocked, people are turning it up too loud.

'...seeing hearloss comparable to senior citizens..' WOW!!! That's very unfortunate.

Heed this warning guys & gals! I don't like ear buds for fidelity and lack of exterior noise rejection. All the SPL energy goes right into the ear canal.

Also, these buds tend to be "very efficient". One watt of input power can produce over 100dB of SPL, right into the ear canal. They have so little mass on the transducer, it takes very little input power to get them crankin' at concert/club levels.
