wwwkKnuwkoncepts.com has very good wiring products and their price are beter than most. As for wiring gage... I suggest #4 as a good fit for this amp. If you plan on adding a 2nd amp later, #4 will handle up nto 132A., in short runs. (under 15 feet)

Have you figured out what subs to use?

yeah, man. i picked out a couple of infinities.

Infinity KAPPA 120.3SE 12" Subwoofer

http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=inf1203se&svbname=309

i'll put two of those puppies in my trunk along with that amp. i also picked out a component system that i'll double up on(one for the front of my car and one for the rear)

INFINITY 60.5CS 6 . 5" Component System

http://www.carstereoexpo.com/603csin65kap.html

whatcha think?

Good choices... solid performers and good prices too.

Are you planning to amp the subs and interior speakers or just the subs and run the Comps off the HU amps?

Swez

i'm gonna amp the subs only, since i'll be combining the 4 channels down to two channels for the two subs. i don't think i'll need an amp for the components, because i think my hu will be strong enough for it.

pioneer deh-6500

i know, not the most expensive choice, but it has nice options and is easy to adjust, with a nice asthetic feel.

Will definitely be bass heavy here with dual 12's and 300 RMS per sub... but you can always add a 4 channel amp later if you want more SPL/SQ from your Comps.

This is a nice HU and good features as well. The amps are 50x4 peak or ~25 watts RMS x 4 into a 4 ohm load per channel. Can expect ~ +105dB from the interior speakers and +130dB in bass with equipment as noted.

In all, a good blend of SQ and SPL in the sub system.

now i know that my system could never ever compare to one of those "show systems", but what decibal ratings do they usually get?

DINGALING on 07/27/2003 11:19:24
oh yeah, now that i have my subs picked out, i should pick out a box. i would really rather buy a box, but i am actually extremely handy with the craft tools. the subs call for 2.0 cubic feet, ported. it said type 3, which i understand to just be a larger box than type 1... i saw a q logic box that had 1.75 cubic feet. how is that?

Here's a 1.9cf ported box that is very well designed and built. Free shipping included in the price as well, so it may be cost less than Q-Logic, but no grill covers.

Sub Zone
ZV-122
Dual 12" Vented 3/4" MDF Box w/ 1.5" Baffle - 1.9cf per sub

Either will work well for the Kappa 120.3se's. Flip a coin...

As for SPL in show cars... am sure it really varies. If one is into DB Drags and such, +145dB are common and a few system can break the 160dB barrier. My last look at World class draggers, they were hitting in the mid 170's dB range.

Here's a frame of reference:

A quiet library: ~50dB
A restaurant of chatty people: ~80dB
A typical lawn mower: 90dB
Live club music: +110-125 dB
Typical Live Concert: 120dB at ~100' from stage, at stage.. 130+dB
A Rocket launch: +150 dB

NOTE: Safe listening levels are below +110dB. If we are exposed to long periods of time with music above ~105dB, hearing damage issues come into play. Safe exposure time varies, but it is generally accepted that 110dB for >15 minutes can give permanent hearing damage. As the dB levels go up, hearing loss potentials go up rapidly too.

Use your new found power wisely,

Swez

PS The last large Club system we installed was preset to 108dB as a maximum theshold. The DJ's could do anything they wanted on their mixers, but the amping system was preset to limit audio outputs.

We tested it at ~115dB for 2 minutes and I had to leave the area as the mid/highs were so piercing, I could not take all that sound w/o hearing protection. It hurt my ears but good. The entire system can do 150dB +, but we wanted to keep lawsuits from hearing loss from being an issue for the owner of the club.

This was ~2,000 sq ft of dance and bar area too. We could not shout 2 feet away (over the system) when in the apex of the main dance floor area. The building was empty , so very little SPL was absorbed by just a few people in the club at the time.

Like Swez said it was common for systems to hit around 140db, but now this year there is a new mic that they use in db drag comp.'s and let me tell ya it's mean! but it's a whole lot more accurate. Now the common street bumper with a lower tuned box will do around 130-135 at full juiced sine waves.

That is very nice equipment you picked out, personaly i love infinity comps( i have the same ones as you ) for some reason the infinity tweeter really pulls me in more so than comp's i have heard on thousand dollar set's. So for me it was like wow awsome set and awsome price.

P.S. the current loudest db certified is 177.4dB by Some guy's in Finland. Treo did have it at 177.3 but it got taken ( don't count them guy's out yet :) )

Relax_The_Mind on 07/28/2003 00:45:23
177.4 dB's is nothing more than a LETHAL WEAPON!!! AHHH!!! I have sat in ~160dB range cars (double ear protection of course) and I felt like wetting my pants and curling up into the fetal position. I woke up 3 days later not knowing where or who I was...j/k but you get my point.

I personally beleive that we are nowhere near a peak in subwoofer design. God forbid when the next major advance in speaker technology is released to the general public. As for now...Its all in the box design and application.

You ever opened up one of those "how can they get so loud" home theatre subs? Ive peaked in a couple of them and was puzzled at first from the way the box was designed and then amazed at the cheapo "factory car" type speakers that were in them. It also make me wonder why we pay so much for Mahogony LAMINATE! hehe

Then again they are more optimized for SQ. I totally trailed on this thread but sorry it was a thought.
