A friend of mine just bought this car, and we are trying to get to the back of the radio, but I can't figure out how to get the dashboard off. Any clues guys? Thanks. Replies (16) Swez on 07/26/2003 08:42:42 www.installdr.com may be of some help to you and I believe there are a few other sites that can give you adeqauate details. Why are you wanting to pull the Factory HU? Upgradeing to an Aftermarket version HU? Comments? Swez ttocs on 07/26/2003 11:41:45 I am not familiar with the new models. Try the carsound.com installer forum. They have great experience there, and some attitude.... audionewb on 07/26/2003 17:41:05 Well I'm wanting to add an amp onto her stereo for 2 10's, running off the factory unit. Supposedly the amp running all her highs is behind the unit. I was wanting to see what that looked like back there. audionewb on 07/27/2003 20:46:03 Do you think I should just get a Line out converter? And how does that exactly work? Thanks. Swez on 07/27/2003 21:35:55 If there are no outbaord amps and just HU amps, then tapping off the rear speakers to high signal input of a decent sub amp will do OK. If you desore to add and LOC, it might be a good option. All the LOC does, is brings the signal voltage down to RCA level input values and then connect to the sub amp/subs. A good LOC will have gain adjustment pots (adjustment resistors) to tailor the output voltage to the input side of the amp. Swez audionewb on 07/28/2003 05:32:50 Well supposedly there is an outboard amp already. I guess it' behind the radio, that's why I was asking how to get behind the dash. So I shouldn't use an LOC if there is already an amp there? Swez on 07/28/2003 07:56:08 Premium stereo installs are a bit more complex to deal with as they often use remote amps in the car to drive speakers. The speakers are often matched to these amps and differ in ohmic value of Aftermarket speakers. What I would do here, is try a temporary tap right off the rear speakers to the high signal input side of the new amp for the mentioned subs. You may have to play with the gain settings a bit to get the right amount of signal to the sub amp, w/o overdriving the inputs into high distortion. (too much input voltage for amp) If this does work, should be good to go. However, if you cannot get the input gain setting to where there is minimal over voltage distortion, then adding an LOC to the rear speaker taps should solve that issue. Finally, let's see if ttocks picks up on this one as well. He has a lot of experience in HU/outboard amp tricks. Maybe he has an alternate method as well. Swez DINGALING on 07/28/2003 11:26:54 i had trouble taking a factory cd player out of a 95 civic once. i pulled the face plate off, and the little rectangle cover, and took off all the pannels i could around the unit to see if i could get at it. when i pulled at it, it seemed as if it was screwed into place.(like yet another civic's factory system was), but it wasn't. long story short, my friend was "helping" me take it out and he jammed a screw driver along the top and bottom sides of the cd player to try to force it out. apparently there were some tabs on the top of the deck holding it in place...hope this helps audionewb on 07/28/2003 15:40:56 Thanks for the help Swez. I don't think the amp has high inputs, so I think I will just need to go with the LOC, unless ttocs got a better idea. ttocs on 07/28/2003 19:35:39 try the high level(speaker level) inputs first. If they sound bad you can then try the loc. Sometimes they work fine, sometimes the sound like crap. audionewb on 07/29/2003 06:45:26 Well I looked on her amp and she has high level inputs, she just doesn't have the adaptor for it. I guess the company that set the amp up in her old car didn't give her the boxes or anything for her stuff so..... guess I'm stuck using LOC's unless I can just buy one of those adaptors? Swez on 07/29/2003 08:05:12 The adaptors I have seen are usually available at a good install shop or even one of the big chains like BB & CC. Just know what amp you have and what the male plug looks like. If you have to, write to the makers Tech Service dept and see if they can send you one for low cost or no cost at all. Swez PS Other wise, the LOC will probably do the job and easy to install too. ttocs on 07/29/2003 11:30:07 Go to a place that sells the same amp and ask them. It is not uncommon for installers to hoard such a part in the bottom of their toolbox(so i hear). More then likely they have some around there somewhere. audionewb on 07/29/2003 16:00:21 I have one other question that I think you guys will be able to help with, about this installation. Since I won't have a remote wire to hook up to the deck, because I can't seem to figure out how to get back to it. Can I just hook the wire into the radio fuse, at the fuse box on her car, or you guys got any other suggestions. I think it should work there because it will turn the amp off when the radio turns off, plus 12 volts goes thru that fuse and that's what the amp needs for turn on right?. ttocs on 07/29/2003 16:18:55 you are correct, either one of those would do as long as it is off with the key. Swez on 07/29/2003 21:02:57 Yep, either is fine... just be sure to fuse the line to ~3A or so. Most REM turn on amps draw less than 75mA, but if you add amps or other devices later that need a REM feed, you'll have current to spare at 3 amps.
