Anyone with alarm knowledge?

I recently purchased this security system online.

Now, the problem is installing it. I have a lot of stereo install experience but no alarm experience at all. I've talked to guys @ Best Buy and CC (who sell this system for $450 bucks) and they say it takes 4 to 5 hrs. to install. But they won't do it because I didn't buy it from them. This is going in a 97' Ford Expedition. I finally found an installer at a private shop and he gave me a price of $200 bucks to install. $125 for install and $75 for some bypass that I supposedly need. What is this bypass? Or is it just extra cash for him?

Thanks Tego

You need the bypass to hook up the remote start on ur vehicle and maybe even for the locks. You car must have an auto kill or something like that, so people cant steal ur car without the key. The bypass, well bypasses this so u can use the remote start and still have ur car protected with the alarm.

$ 200 doesnt seem like a bad price for the install and bypass.

I did my first alarm this summer with no knowledge at all. I just found the wiring information for my vechile and went away. I did not install the remote start though since i didnt by the bypass.

I installed the Compustar 2wss-as. It took me about 8 hours. In the end i blew a lock output because after i took the relays apart to cut my wires down to length i put them back together wrong. And right now in the cold winters of WI my siren works sometimes and sometimes not. Usually not but atleast i have my horn honk that works. Thats due to installation error or the cold weather i dont know.

Its not very hard to do at all as long as u have the right info., patience, and take ur time.

I recommend asking and getting info. from the 12volt.com they helped me out alot. Lessismorespl and ttocs may also be able to help u out on here.

alarms are actually my favorite things to do. i have probably installed around 150 alarms/remote starts, so i'm pretty exeperienced with them. one thing i can tell you is to not do it yourself, especially with it being a remote start.

1 - you need the bypass. your car has the ford PATS system and uses a chip in the key. you can either use a DEI 556UW bypass for $49.99 or less, in which you'll have to wrap a spare key inside it and wrap the other end of the module around the ignition barrell, or you can use a DEI 556FW bypass for $149.99 or less, which is programmable and you don't need a key. either way the bypasses can be kind of tricky.

2 - you have to go to the engine to get the tach wire for your remote start. not fun, and the wires usually suck to get to in fords, but if i recall an expedition tach wire is easier than most others.

3 - doing keyless entry on your car sucks because the lock wires are REALLY high up in the drivers kickpanel. very awkward to get to.

4 - you'll have to cut your starter wire in half.

5 - your car has two ignition wires and two accessory wires. the unit you have (along with almost every other unit DEI makes) has outputs for 2 ignition and 1 accessory wire, so you'll need to add a relay to get the second accessory wire working.

i could go on all day. if somebody said $200 installed, let him do it. you can REALLY mess something up if you're not careful. if you are careful though, it's gonna take you 2 days at least.

I agree w/ UK here, a basic alarm system is not that difficult, but when you get into the higher end alarms, especially w/ remote start, it is best ot have it done professionally. Remote Starts are very tricky regardless of experience and vehicle.

Actually, $200 is a very good price to have an alarm installed, especially since he is including the bypass(s). About 4-5 hours is avg. for that alarm. I have over 20 yrs exp. and I would say 3-5 hours easy. Don't take chances, get it done right and drop the $200.....you will thank yourself in the end.

ask how he makes his connections, T-tap, crimp, solder? Ask how many he has done, and how many on that vehicle?

Can't you hit the door locks on the top of the dash like similar F150's? Pink/yellow and pink/green?

He did tell me I will be losing a key, so he must be taking that route. I think he also said he has done one or two Expos. But he did say it is similar to the F-150's. Well,I looked around quite a bit and he's the one I gotta go with. Wish me luck! And him

Well, security system and remote starter are in! Installer did a very good job @ my shop with the install. Took him about 2 1/2 hrs. I run a four bay garage so we ended up doing a swap. He wanted a Flowmaster 40 series custom exhaust for his S-10, so it ended up costing me around $110 bucks and some custom pipe bending and welding. Did such a good job on my security system, I asked him if he wanted to do a little moonlighting on the side at my shop for audio and alarm systems. ( I have a lot of people ask me about these) So I printed up some flyers, put them on my counter, and I let him use my fourth bay. Already done two installs in a week, and he and I are making a little extra cake.
P.S. I would suggest that alarm system to anyone, it does just about everything, and works as advertised!
