Been off the board for awhile, back to work six days a week, but glad to see things still going strong @CK! Here's my question. I recently picked up a 1997 Ford Expedition and I'm looking for suggestions for door speakers. They call for either 5-1/4 round or 6x8's in both front and rear doors.I'm all set with my sub amp(Alpine M301)running two Alpine 1021's type R"s.I would like to go with components, and I will be running an 80 watt RMS 4-channel amp to them. So far I have looked @ these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ALPINE-6x8-INCH-200w-CAR-AUDIO-COMPONENT-SPEAKER-SYSTEM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38646QQitemZ8018631970QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW http://cgi.ebay.com/Infinity-Reference-6800CS-6-x8-5-x7-Component-Set-NEW_W0QQitemZ5834794324QQcategoryZ18800QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Any one with experience with the 6x8's or should I just go with the 5 1/4" s Thanks Tego Replies (5) Ash on 12/2/2005 09:15:46 In my opinion and experience, since that is a larger vehicle with more space to fill, go with the 6x8". 5.25's are hard to get full sound at higher volumes without extensive baffling techniques. Running 80 watts to both front and rear on the 6x8" should net good results with good midbass performance. Many complain about the shape of the 6x8 cones causing a lesser performance, yet I have never really seen that as a major problem. As far as choosing between the two you have linked, the Infinity Reference series have netted quite a few complaints in several consumer reviews in that they are too "bright" with the hard dome tweeter that it uses. The Alpines' use a soft dome tweeter, which should have a smoother sound. The Alpine's power handling is a bit of a drag (40 rms) compared to the Infinity's (90). Yet, you have to take in account how they were tested; more than likely at full range without a HPF. Power handling for the Alpine's should increase as a crossover is used and chops off some of the lower bass say around 70-100 HZ and under. Shouldn't be a problem as this vehicle usually includes a factory sub or do you plan to add one? swez on 12/2/2005 09:26:26 Would you consider a plate type component set? That's a 5.25' rounds and 1" tweeter. These would sound good up front and use 6x8'' Coaxials or Comps in back for added MB performance. Ash is right, to get above average MB performance with them, they would need a well designed baffle system. Sort of like what you did on the rear speakers in your Lumina might work out well. The Alpine's are just not strong enough for your amp. Don't think they would handle the power well enough. Swez PS I'll try to catch you on YIM or Skype, later today ttocs on 12/3/2005 10:17:27 On most fords, with a 1/2 inch baffle you can fit a 6.5 in the 6 x 8 hole with out any problems. montego_27 on 12/3/2005 18:50:40 Thanks, Scott I'm going with the 6 1/2's. Found an extra pair of 1/2 inch spacers hangin' around too! Now this really opens up my choices on components. Any suggestions out there? Thanks, Tego P.S. Right now I installed a Pioneer HU and I'm hooked into the factory amp and speakers through the existing wiring harnesses. Does anyone have any idea what these factory amps put out? I will be setting up a 4- channel amp when the speakers come (80 x4 RMS) but I was just curious. Ash on 12/4/2005 12:04:18 In that case, the newer Infinity Reference series now has a silk tweeter instead of the hard dome. It also comes with a variable tweeter attenuation circuit on the crossover as well. That's a great improvement over the older ones. Power handling is still good as well and will suit the 80 watts rms fine. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-3wr1ilSjJ91/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=52000&id=detailed_info&i=1086010CS#Tab Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
