New Tang Band 8"!

Looks like Tang Band's got a new one with pretty good specs. I've already ran it through WIN ISD and came out with nice results. Can get a ported F3 in the mid to low 30's in about .54cft (EBS)! With a xmax of 12mm they've got to be somewhat impressive. Only drawbacks I've seen so far is the sensitivity is low (84db) and handle only 150 rms. Yet, have seen other high brand name subs with a similiar low SPL rating so maybe that's not so bad. One thing though, with that small of enclosure, 4 can easily be ran in about 2 cft ported with some good low frequency output. Yeh, I know I'm "eight crazy" but check em' out and tell me what you think:

Hey, I like this one too. Power specs for an 8" woofer are terrific and so is frequency response. (Fs = 28 Hz.)

You will find most high SQ woofers will have low efficiency ratings due to mass of the cone, motor and suspension systems used. This one has a 2" voice coil. A lot cheaper than Dynaudio, Morel, Focal, Vifa, A/C or Usher.

I could easily swap these out with the credences and get the response I'm looking for without changing the box. The power handling is the same. Shipping is free right now too for orders over $99! That's if I can sneak them past my fiance (already have too much spare equipment lying around).

Tell me something though. Do you find the wide surround a concern? I've always figured a wider surround takes away from the cone area that actually moves air. If so, what about the extra xmax? Think it will even out the lessened cone area or it still should be better than the average 8" in it's class?

Just visited the Tangband website and it seems that they have a similiar version with a rubber surround as well. Wonder why PE hasn't got that one? I'm very curious on trying these babies out! They got me excited or it could be this mega strength morning coffee! LOL!

Maybe I am wrong here, but it seems to me that since the surround is firmly attached to the cone and it moves with the cone, why would it not be considered as part of the cone for sound radiation? The overall area of the cone is in motion, so is the surround. It is moving air as well right?

Also, woofers are about moving air. (actually, displacing air to form sound waves) The more cone excursion a piston can generate, the more air it will displace. Am sure there are some rather complex physics equations that proof all this out, but I am not very up on that aspect.

The bottom line in my mind, is cone area and cone excursion. The more we have of these in the equation, the more bass waves the transduce can produce. (at higher amplitude)

Analogy: Seems pretty much like "bore & stroke" of a piston driven engine here. (to me anyway) The larger the bore and longer the stroke of a piston in a cylnder head, the more air/fuel it can take in to produce higher power output. The old addage in car racing is similar to speakers.... " There's no replacement for more displacement" !!!

Take this with a grain of salt OK?

Looked at some reviews on these and they were very liked for their performance. One did state that the dust caps were rather thin and untreated paper though. Don't know about that in the car environment. Wonder if it can be easily treated with "The Wet Stuff" PE sells.

I have used water proofing paint on dust caps before with no ill effects. This is permissable if the sub does not need an air flow through at the dust cap for cooling purposes.

If it does cool through the dust cap, several light coats should work, as long as you don't block the air through dust cap.

Yo Swez! Homey! Dude! They have went and done it! Pe got these babies on sale for 35 bucks each! Go's off on the 28th! Gotta have em! Gonna get em'! Too much dang TEMPTATIONNNNN!

Seriously though, this would be a good time to pick up a pair, the set of tweets, and any other parts that will be needed from PE. With the sub sale and free shipping on $100+ orders, could save a good bit of cash flow.

Yo Bro, too big to pass up this tempting offering. The Audio gods seem to be smiling on us this year end. I would expect to see a lot of "blow out" prices in the next 3 months too.

Companies will try to spur more unit sales to move old stock and excess inventories between now and January's end. Now is the time to snarf up these sweet deals. Save your pennies... they add up fast!
