Hey its me again..im stuck when building the speaker box..

You guys told me to take out the hole in my box for my two 10'' JL audio 10w series...

When i took the hole out, and patched it up, i was disapointed with the sound it made. For some reason, it was much louder, and had more bass when the the box had a hole. When i patched it up, it wasnt no where near where it had been. Am i hearing something wrong??
PLease help!

-steve

thanks

Hummm, you are definitely a ported box guy.

Give me the following details and I will see what port sizes will work in the present box you have now.

1. External dimensions of the box (H, W & D)
2. Thickness of wood used
3. Did you use a divider board between the subs? (separate chambers)

Also realize that you will need a SSF on this amp to protect your subs. Will let you know what value to use, after I calculate the porting options available.

The box probably did sound louder with the hole in it as it let the subs breath a bit better. But with only a 1" hole as a vent, the difference was louder subs, but not tuned for optimal bass performance.

1.-23.5 inches long
-9.5 inches deep
-11 inches tall

(keep in mind, there is excess wood)

2. Half and Inch think wood..its compressed

3. Yes, there is a half inch divider board between the subs, all caulked up.

SSF? whats that

What im aiming for is to make my car shake..i want these subs to just be shaking!

Hummm, that box is very small for dual 10's. Where did you get the dimensions for this box? This is way too small a box for these woofers to give much deep bass.

After running some numbers, it looks like each woofer is in a 0.5 cf (sealed) chamber. This will produce good, punchy bass above 50 Hz., but very poor low bass.

If you want to try an experiment, use ports that are 1.5" (I.D.) x 6.75" (L). This will tune the box to about 36 Hz. Since there is limited space on the front panel for porting, you may have to use the top panel for the ports. (one per chamber)

If I recall correctly, these are 10W0-8 subs yes?

If so, here is a .pdf on the recommended sealed and ported box specs for the 10W0 series:

http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/10_12_15W0_MAN.pdf

These specs are per sub. So, if you plan to use a pair of them, will have to double the width and add 1/2" for the divider board as well. These specs will deliver solid low bass if you follow the directions.

try some polyfil and see if it helps.

Sorry, but I doubt that even 100% fill will help this box. Even the porting aspects mentioned earlier may not salvage this design.

Chalk this one up to a learning experience. The mfg's give box recommendations for a reason. If we follow their recommendations, the results are almost always satisfactory. The only variable in the equation, is the skill of the builder.

Try again and you'll be very proud of the results, if you follow JL's recommendations. There are no shortcuts to building a great sounding system. Follow instructions, ask questions when we get stuck and learn from past mistakes. We all make them in the beginning. Your next effort, should be worth the delays. (cost of experience... Priceless)
