a buddy of my got a used alpine type s 12inch sub and a coustic 2 channel amp for 50 bucks... problem is on one of the voice coil leads the wire broke off. what is the best way to fix this problem. it looks like about an eighth on a inch of the tinsle lead is missing, so there is not enough to reattach... dont know how long the sub has been this way but he has been running the sub, not sure if it just happened or if it has been this way. will this damage the sub. he said sometimes it plays and other times it dont move at all, if he presses in on the sub it starts to work again for a while. i have some old 6x9s laying around, is it possible to soider the two wires together and then soider the new piece to the voice coil terminal?? any suggestions would be greatly helpful thank you.

If this sub plays at all, it must be a DVC sub??? Frankly, it sounds like one coil is on its last legs and the other one has been chopped off.

If you wanted to play with it and try to get the damage coil operating, this will be a very delicate repair.

1. Get yourself some fine gage wire (#18-20 AWG)
2. Strip off the insulation about 10" down on the wire
3. Fold this length in half (now 5" long)
4. Spiral wind one end to the tinsel lead and solder it the best you can, to the tinsel lead (soldering to tincel leads can be tricky, if N/G.. try crimping the new wire to the tinsel lead with a "tiny" fishing split shot)
4a. If you have some small shrink tubing handy, make a knot in the tinsel lead, wrap with new wire and slide the shrink tube over the joint and heat until the tubing binds wiring together
5. Loosely braid (wind) the new wire and solder to sub terminal
6. Be sure to leave some sag 3/4" flex) in the new wire connection so the sub can move freely

If the other coil is iffy, don't even use it. Just insert a 10Kohm resistor between the lugs on that coil to bleed off passive inductive currents. With some luck and skilled hands, this might work.

Good luck,
Swez
