Hey, I know a young HS grad that would really love to get into the Audio biz. He has looked into schooling, but the cost is steep. Audio Engineering is his goal.

Any thoughts on how he might approach a few local studios for an apprenticeship or internship?
He lives in CA, so am sure there are many to choose from in his locale. THINK

We are offering internships as we speak. Internships can be done from anywhere (music business wise) communication must be key. We have internships around the world i.e. india, austria, all over the US, canada...etc.

Most internships start out in the promotional area then you kiss booty until the studio find a place for you or think you have enough experience to do what your told and not get in the way.

There are many ways to find production companies that are look for internships or actual jobs. The best way to approach a studio is to call and play the "desperate fresh college kid" ask for any type of internships. Keeping in mind that most internships are volunteer with hopes of getting an actual job.

The low down... Music companies actually love internships and almost always hire 'reliable' help because you are basically a free worker. Even if they dont plan on hiring you, the experience you get can be stuck on your resume and make you look pretty, basically saying if even though they dont seem like they show interest its a win/win situation.

Personally I work with several people (most i met in person) that started as internships but eventually found a place in our production company (we are way more than just a prod. company).

Persistance is what we look for when thoset times comes around so id tell him to make connections (Connections is the only thing you need). Garage studios are everywhere you turn you just have to know people. Learn the trade. To tell you the truth most Audio Engineers never stepped foot in any audio type school just business classes. They only get degrees for formal reasons.

Hope that was enough. Some times I sit in almost 24 hour meetings at times so fabricating ideas and topics is second nature to me. Patience is also key. If anything else is needed. He can email us.

Well we are located along the east coast we have a studio in New York, Virginia, and starting on around the DC area (fairfax).

We have 2, if i remember correctly, promoters out there on internships (no my job to keep up with them). We work with an intern from Universal records (you know...the biggest label in the world) all promotional interns just sit and we would send them out all demos, posters, t-shirts, etc.... and hand them out or throw events. We of course fund these events and all.

I'll see if I can find something going on in the CA area but then again CA is huge... heh
