Running two of those would be pretty extreme with the Polks in my opinion. They are both good products but, I think you will have a problem with the bass being overbearing. That is a lot of power to acquire to run the subs as well.

The subs are 2 ohm per coil, requiring if bridged: either a 2ohm or a .5 ohm stable monoblock amp. The latter will be hard to find and expensive. The 2 ohm is common, but will still require a beefy amp that is gonna suck quite a bit of juice for those woofers requirements. Not to mention at that power level the bass will be overbearing for the Polks.

One question before going any further, tell how do want your system to soundl?

These are very nice subs. They are 2+2 DVC coils and sound great in a 0.85cf, sealed box/sub. They can be ported as well, for more low end bass performance.

A single sub can take 500 Wrms. Here, you get a 1 or 4 ohm load, depending on how it is wired to the amp. See them online for $99.00/ea. It is best to buy amps from sellers that offer a warranty plan.

Do you have an amp in mind to drive this sub(s)? Best to keep the amp power closer to about 300 Wrms @ 2 ohms and use only 1 sub. If you go that route, use the 4+4 DVC version (SWR-1042) for a net 2 ohms load.

FYI: A 300 watt (RMS) amp will draw about 30-35 amperes of current at full power. If you go to a larger amp, may need to seriously upgrade your electrical system as well. That can set you back close to $500.00 more.

PS Ash is right... gotta map this all out so that you are not too bass heavy. Polks are pretty efficient, but they sound best when amped.

i didnt know those would be so loud and overbearing, i dont wont the subs drowning the polks so im going to look at other options...

do you guys recommend anything that wont be too pricey esp. with an added sub?

asplundher on 10/23/2005 12:10:02
If you give a price budget and desired sound there are several trusted sources that are good. Personally, I like the Dayton Quattro's on Partsexpress.com. They are one of those items that few know of, but perform very well for the money and carry a excellent warranty. Compare them to other's in that price range:

thanks for the info, im looking for some good quality subs that arent too loud, i wont be cranking up the bass alot i just want that feel in the car when a good song comes up on my cd, i dont want the whole neighborhood to hear me coming from blocks away, but i want the guy next to me at a red light to know that i got some subs.

as for price i think 200 -250 should be more than enough to cover the price, since ill probably buy on ebay

Trust me, try the Daytons. They are a very good SQ sub that requires very little space to play the deep notes, but will put out some potent bass that wil be felt and heard as well. They play very clean, are versatile, durable as well. I have own and installed several 10's and 8's of this brand and find them hard to beat for the money and warranty. They even come with full T/S specs and good enclosure recommendations (sealed and ported).

No problem! If you need anything else, just ask.

Ash is right on as usual. If you are running the Polks off HU amps, it might be a good idea to get a solid 4 channel amp and bridge the rear channels for a single sub. (4 ohms)

A solid 75-100 x 4 amp will do well for your Polks and have plenty enough power for a single sub. If you have a budget number in mind, we can search a few good brands for you and then off to e-bay if you wish.

FYI: E-bay is definitely the cheapest place to shop. However, many are not authorized dealers there and you may not get a MFG warrantee. Some may offer a limited warrantee. They get the amp fixed for you, but the wait can be long.

thanks for your feedback swez, i wasnt planning to get an amp for the speakers but a couple of days ago while i was driving inmy car i thought it would definately help them out.
i even thought of getting two amps for the spkrs and subs.

but if you could recommend a well rounded amp and a nice little sub for me i would greatly appreciate it.
could you even tell me about ash's recommendation on the daytons?

as for price i think 150 should be good for a sub maybe a little more if im buying two and i want an amp that maybe 200-250 for a nice one.

alright thanks swez

There are 2 main ways to approach this project:

1. Use a solid 2 channel amp (75-100 Wrms x 2) for your Polks

1a. Add a modest Class D MONO amp (300 Wrms is plenty) and a single 10-12" sub, the key is a well matched box for your sub.

Yes, Dayton makes some very solid subs and marketed via Parts Express. www.partsexpress.com

2. The other plan is to use a strong 4 channel amp (75-100 Wrms/ch)to power your Polks and a sub. Here, you only need 1 amp and minimal expenses for wiring and other hardware.

It is good to stick with quality brand names like Alpine, JBL, Infinity, Kicker. MTX, Kenwood and Rockford. Some are very spendy due to the brand name attached. (Ie: Kicker, MTX and Rockford) The others brands are quality and can be had for well below retail, if you shop well.

Some possible choices:

4 channel amps:

1. Power Acoustik: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-66xKOtNFsRB/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=026TS9604

2. MTX: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-66xKOtNFsRB/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=236T564

3. Alpine: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-66xKOtNFsRB/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=500MRVF345 (shop this one for under $225.00)

There are many others out there as well. HiFonics, Orion, Phoenix Gold and the list goes on. Just depends how much web searching you wish to do.

2 Channel Amps:

3. Kicker: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-66xKOtNFsRB/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=2064KX2502

4. Rockford: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-66xKOtNFsRB/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=575P3002

Class D Sub amps:

2. DEI: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_4337.html

3. Phoenix Gold: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_2747.html

This is just a short list. There are so many options out there, depending on brand, features, power ratings and where you buy.

Have a look at what has been listed and do some google searches for best prices in your budget. We'll get to a sub choice on the next go-round OK.
