CK showcar

hey guys.. long time no see... it's a long story.
anyways, I just started at a new shop with two guys that I used to work for. They do alot more custom fabrication and pay better too!! woo hoo!
I know we talked once about doing a car together, and I was wondering how difficult everyone thought it might be to get together (hopefully with a sponsor) and bang out a 48 hour show car like some of the instructional forums do.
thoughts?
suggestions?
shoot downs?

one more thing.. I have worked for a few different stereo shops.. I don't think it would be difficult to get the product cheaper than you can online.. most still honor my 10% above cost discount.. we just need to decide what brand to use.

what are you thinkin?

lessismorespl on 10/9/2005 22:30:25
I think it is a good idea. We need to also decide if this will be a SQ, SQL, or str8 SPL design. This will play an important role in what equipment is used.

Victor on 10/10/2005 02:41:43
lol.. scott asks ..What are you thinking,,? and kittle asks .. What are you asking..??...hehehehehe,,.

Are you guys talking about putting together an audio system with all of us at CK working on it and compete?? advertising CK.. or something like that?? Getting it sponsored by a manufacturer or a few of them ???

I dunno am confused about what u are really planning to do...

Victor...

ttocs on 10/10/2005 08:01:36
idunno? What are YOU asking???? :)

I think there has only been a couple of people on this forum that have actually met? Who's gonna build it?

swez on 10/10/2005 08:01:38
This has got to be good! GRIN Four top techs get together and say...

Whad ya thinkin?
Why ya askin?
Good idea...
I duuno, am cornfused

Yep, it's got my antennae up now too. OK, let's knock it around a bit and see what is possible. I love it already!

IDEA 's???

1. Need a vehicle

2. A theme... something that represents this site, its personalities and the combined talents of those who represent CK

3. Some nice gear to put in it

4. Working capital and/or donations for the stuff we need

5. Who will build it?

Alrighty then... we are all big thinkers here. Let's see what resources are at our disposal and form a plan of action. Need a road map huh? this could be a lot of phun!

A car wouldbe the first step....what type of car, will this be a complete rebuild of the car or just a sound system?

Asfor equipment,we first need to decide what type of system. I would prefer a SQ personally b/c SPL system are fairly simple. A good SQ system is much more difficult and if we get seriously into this, I personally would invite the challenge of designing and building a serious SQ car. I would also enjoy being part of the whole design process on the install. Something show quality w/ fiberglass and some neon to accent the whole install.

I can do some digging around and see what resources are available for equipment. I have a pretty good relationship w/ some reps and some manufacturers. We would have to come up w/ a design and diagrams for most manufacturers, or even reps to gain their interest in donating equipment. We could also consider finding some sponsers once we put together what we want to do.

I live in Michigan, so we would have to put our heads together on where this would take place and how we could all come together to maek this work. I have a nice Digital Camera which we can use for basic steps of the install, but a Digital Video Camera would be really nice.

I'll break it down..
Let's throw some ideas around, see what we can do finding sponsors, and put it together.
in other words, let's design an outstanding vehicle in words on this forum and then make it happen. Surely there are enough connections within this forum to make this happen. Not next week, not next month. this will probably take a few months to put together, and I will have to save some money for an extended weekend vacation.

First of all the debate between SPL and SQ. I have always been a SQ person, but I love building SPL vehicles as well, so what do you say something like 50/50 or maybe lean more to SQ?

once we decide that, then we can agree on a vehicle type that suits our needs.

any ideas on donations / sponsors? could we do something advertisement wise on Ebay? advertise on our foreheads.. I mean vehicle. where can we enter this vehicle for competitions?

This can and will work

Victor on 10/10/2005 10:32:40
For the debate between SQ and SPL , I would definitely prefer building a SQ system cause its way more a challenge and great fun, and with techs like us all getting together i wonder what kind of a system we could design.

I could help a lot on the designing part, technical drawings.
Since its an SQ system, I would not like to give the vehicle or the system any jazzy kind of look, It should look equally sophisticated as the System. Plain colours, nice flowing lines, and simplicity in design would merge well with the concept of the SQ system. It should make a bold statement with all its simplicity.

I cant do much help on getting the products at a discount, cause dunno anyone whose dealing with Great SQ products Since most of the good companies are either american or european, i guess these products are much cheaper when bought there in the USA, cause out here the prices are sky high and it wud be pointless to do the buying in India.

Ofcourse If its a SQ system there definitely are a set of guidelines which all of us are aware of and i dont think there wud be a major issue when working on this.

Another thing I could help on is with the ideas of building up funds for this vehicle. Since i know of this now, i will also start saving some money myself for this possible project.

lets start with an imaginary setup , how about all of us here, list up a name of companies they know make great Quality products suitable for the SQ system. I know its gonna be way expensive when we actually make it.

lemme start with those which come to my mind.

Nakamichi,
Mchintosh,
Focal,
Alpine,
Audio Control,
Hifonics,
Orion,
MB-Quart,
Memphis,
Diamond Audio,
Sound Stream,
CDT,
Clarion,
Eclipse,
JL Audio,
Boston Acoustics,
Dyn Audio

I am all for the SQ vehicle. In MECA many of the vehicles are hitting high 140's and low 150's. I do not see a 50/50 median in systemswhen it comes to SPL, you end up w/ more of one than the other.

If those on the SQ side of things concentrate their time on the SQ properties of the system, and those more SPL oriented concentrate on the SPL aspect I believe we can come up w/ a nice system.

I will be the first to admit when it comes to technical aspects, body work, graphics, engine and suspension work, etc... I know about as much as a 2 year old. My speciality has always been sound systems and the past 5 years I have been learning more about the electrical system for better performance from the sound system. So if we have any people w/ good technical and mechanical skills, that would be a helpful input also, lets face it, we do not want some rust bucket w/ 5 or 6K of equipment in it. I would really like to see something flashy, a car that not only gets noticed by it's looks and performance, but by it's sound system also. The kind of vehicle that makes people say "Nice Ride" then when the system is turned on the say "WOW! Tat is an awesome ride!"

I know I can do some talking to reps, and have some sponsership experience. I will talk to a few manufacturers (Mitek Corp., Diamond Audio, Audio Control, and Eclipse just to name a few) and see what we need to do once we get the vehicle and some form of plan together. I can also talk to some IASCA, MECA, and SLAP officials to see what needs to be done for sponsership from them and find out what some of their major shows are so we can possibly make some of the mid to late season shows. I think would be a great project for many of usto build our reps up from. I have recently left car audio shops and now have been doing freelance work by word-of-mouth and self advertising, so I know it would help my rep out tremdously.
Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

I'd love to join in, but I have to be honest that I have my hands full with everything else going on, let alone finishing my own truck......

As for the sq/spl mix with the right equipment I think you/we can get a good mix. It doesn't really take more then a bass knob or a good eq with sub output to turn it up er down.

It sounds like we would be picking up a shop sponsor as we will need a place to do the install. Seems to me we have the ability to generate sales, as well as advertise for these sponsors on here?

Victor on 10/10/2005 16:17:02
I am totally for a SQ system here, something not going above 140db's. Smooth, clear, crisp, detailed sound, with great imaging and staging. A system balanced in all aspects with a flat response.

If we talk about ride, and performance, then we gotta do a lot of work with the vehicle, body, engine, interiors, suspension etc.. are we planning for that??? or are we specifically looking towards a great SQ system..??

lets first identify the goal. and then go ahead with this.

Victor..

swez on 10/10/2005 18:57:37
Looks like a good mix of SQ amd some SPL seems to be the main theme here. The obvious choice is an SQL machine!

As for funding the project, this will be a bit more tricky. For starters, why not look to our readers for "some degree" of support. Donations in the form of materials and $ could be an option. Other thoughts include vendors who wish to participate and of coarse, adverstise their wares.

If we go this route, it's good to get Walt involved early as he is the site guru and should be made aware of the plans.

As for the question of who will fabricate and build the vehicle... Less and I both live in MI. We are about 2 hours away from each other. If he's up to it and I have time in my schedule, (we make time right?) this is one of many possible answers.

As for a car to do this project, do we look for one via donations, purchase or maybe use (offer up) one of our rides for this "masterpiece on wheels"? Sort of like a car audio makeover where we make a video from A-Z might be interesting???

lessismorespl on 10/11/2005 10:44:31
Yes, I'll pass on a girl too...got my hands full w/ having full custody of my son.

I think if we can put our heads together on here, get our ideas together, as well as do much of the design work on here, we can make this happen.

I have sent out emails to some reps and manufacturers that may be willing to sponser and/or donate some equipment. It is all a waiting game now. Walt can be a big help being the admin to the site so we have some form of solid professional backing, as well as maybe offer to do some free advertising online for the companies that donate equipment.

What do you say Walt, you think if we could throw some free advertising on the site out there? This may help get some nice donations from the manufaturers. This site is pretty well travelled so some advo would assist, plus we will have to use some decals for the vehicle itself....that will not be negotiable...done some sponserships and know this first hand. We will have to come up w/ a nice design for the site's logo also.

Lets keep this going and see where it ends up.

Oh, by the way Victor, you can get excellent SQ out of car hitting 150's, in 03 the MECA World Finals, there were several cars hitting mid 150's and MECA is all about SQ and installation. So I really don't think we should try to limit what we can achieve, but take our our ideas and experience and see what we can do. If the car hits 130-140...nice, if it hits 150-160 even better. A good example wouldbe my car, it has been scoped and everything staged, it hits 143.6 on a Termlab meter and is stillcrystal clear from 10' away w/ the doors open or the windows down.

I agree with you less..but what i meant to say was that , lets aim for an SQ system, yeah if we get good SPL along its a plus... i guess i cud not find better words to convey this so i tried putting it like the way i did in the previous post...

Regarding designing, as i said earlier , lets chalk out a real possible plan here, do most of the configuration, art work and technical stuff here, and I am sure with walt, swez, scott, kittle, PL, chronos, UK, tinker, Mr.B and rest of the inactive golds and other members we sure got a great team who can work on fabricating the system.

Have worked with swez on a few projects and we have developed a good rapot as a team, i am sure we can distribute the jobs well among ourselves as per our expertise. We need a leader, and a team. And most importantly we need a good critic who can point out loop holes nad help us do better work.

I dunno if walt would like the idea of advertising on the site, as he has kept this site free of it till now to avoid the hassels related with it. I personally wud not mind advertising on CK as it wud even help keep the site alive and ease some load on walt.

Indian chicks are hot...hehehe.. lemme know if we got extra budget, can send one from here, if we can sponsor her...lol

Victor...

PS. just a point why i tried to limit the SPL number, is that beyond 120db's as all of us know how difficult it is for human ears to hear the clarity. distortion levels increase and the human ability to perceive sound degrades.

lessismorespl on 10/11/2005 11:30:29
Very good, I would like to shoot for more of a SQ system, but SPL would play a major factor overall in the system. If we shoot for SQ and do our designing and tuning right, we would end up w/ a verygood SQL vehicle.

As for advertising, I'm not going to sugar coat this: If we expect manufacturers to donate equipment and accessories, we will have to work out some free advertising...bottom line! Not just on the vehicle, but probasbly on the site also. It will be the only way to get good quality donations from manufacturers. I have ran sponsership vehicles before and advertising is one of the big factors in the agreement. I seen a guy lose his sponsership b/c he did not have the proper advo decals on his vehicle and a manufacturer's rep was present at Daytona they stripped him of the sponsership by the following show.

A shop I was involved w/ for afew years was building a vehicle and they are one of the biggest MTX and JL Dealers in the state and they had to jump thru hoops to get equipment donated for a show vehcile they were building. It all comes down to advertising if you want donated equipment, I do not see where it would hurt, especially if we can get some decent equipment. This would not just mean manufacturers, but maybe some shops or even online stores would be willing to donate for some free advo. Just a thought.

Hey guys, I wud suggest, that all of us possible get on some real time messaging, yahoo, MSN, skype all of these are good messengers which have voice conferencing . It will be much better to share ideas and work on thsi project in real time.

if we cud decide on a time, all get together, it wud be really great..

I was already expecting to have to advertise on the site and our vehicle for those who donated equipment. We will need graphic work done and I guess we will have to have that professionsally since I can bairly draw a stick man if you know what I mean.

Does anyone have any thoughts/inputs on what this show car can/will be used for? Obviously, "show car" implies it will attend shows, compete in some form.... what else? Just trying to get a feel for what may be involved here. We're not going after Alma Gates status right?

Like Victors' idea of online chats with fellow team mates as we plan, map out strategies and report on progress. Yes, we have a chat spot here at CK. Or, use one of the IM's out there and set designated times for general planning meetings. Skype, is by far the best overall program out there for VoIP, pics, text and conferencing. It's free to all. A great program. www.skype.com to sign up and register.

Am sure we have a few graphics guys on this site already. Just need to find out who they are and get some ideas out on the table. What's wrong with stick men? Have seen some clever stuff out there, using stick men... hehe

I would offer my car, but it is an everyday driver and I connot have it off the road. Also, I'm hoping we are talking about a show car that will be used in competitions and such, not only to promote the site, but to promote all involved.

I have been talking to some people that do body & paint work, they said as long as we use their shops name and the name of the tech on the the vehicle, they would gladly put in some work on the car, within reason of course, we can't get some $5k flip fade or $7k plat flake. We can get a nice med-heavy flake, candy, or wet pearl. I'm thinking use the colors of the site and go from there. As for graphics, if we can come up w/ a design, I know a few places that do custom graphics & decals for vehicles and they will work w/ me on cost, somewhere around 15% over cost, which is very good b/c the mark-up on customgraphics & decals is around 85%.

As for the vehicle, I'm checking into a possible donation of a used vehicle from some of the major local dealerships. Again, we would have to include the name for advo purposes, but if we can get a decent used car for free...who cares how many names are on it.

I have talked to Mitek, Eclipse, and Audio Control, they all said pretty much the same thing....give me something on paper and we will go from there. Also, CDT Audio is willing to give us all of our mid/high speakers as long as we have a plan and some form of what we plan to do on paper. RE may also be willing to do some subs if we have something laid out on paper.

I'm still working on other possible sponserships, and it seems Walt has no problem w/ advertising, so I think we may be able to put this together.

I will be checking back now & then on this to see where we are at. I recently moved to Mt Pleasant, MI. so I'm still getting settled in. I will keep up on things and see what comes up. My email is:

I have the same issue... need the ride as my daily driver too. If I could shelve it for 3-6 months, it would be an option.

lessismorespl on 10/17/2005 13:59:08
Yes, no more Sagnasty. The donated car from a dealership is out, they are not interested b/c they do not see where the advbertising would benefit them or their business.

Equipment is still open, however we must figure out some way we can make some shows and competitions, they require so many per season for advo purposes and to promote their products.

Looks like this post has lost some steam.....well, I'm still on it b/c Imay just do something myself if I can find an affordable car. I already have 3 manufacturers interested in sponsering a vehicle.
