good things and bad things have been said about getting a capacitor for my system...what do you guys/girls say? If you are going to drop some money on your system to improve the overall voltage, buy a good Deep Cycle battery, Stinger, Optima, and Lightning Audio all make good deep cycle batteries...and do the Big 3 upgrade. Money well spent in wire upgrades and a strong BAT, will deliver more than any CAP could. He mentioned some of the higher quality Marine (Deep Cycle) BATs here. But, there are good house brands that will still deliver solid performance at a budget price too. What you look for is a high CCA number. (Cold Cranking Amps) The higher the CCA rating, the more reserve power (watts) the BAT will deliver to your bass system. An Optima Red Top 1000 CA 850 CCA 110 RC runs about $129.99, about the same price as an Interstate or Diehard w/ the same ratings. Difference is the Deep Cycle battery will charge faster, hold the charge better, and discharge it's reserve capacity quicker than a typical battery. A standard lead/acid BAT will never meet that criteria. One might find a typical lead/acid battery to fail within less then 10 deep cycle discharges. Also, the plates (anodes & cathodes) on a Deep Clycle BAT are considerably larger and of more robust materials. They can last 3-4 time longer than typical lead/acid batteries under heavy use. That alone, is a good reason to buy an Optima BAT. " Uhmmm, that's not an accurate statement Mr. B. Optima publishes the numbers on how many full discharges Optima products can take. That number is a statistical average and generally, the specs are pretty conservative as well. (read as... the worst you'll get is) I have a generic (WalMart/Interstate?) 550 CCA, Deep cycle BAT for my boat. It 8 years old now and was used for my trolling motor and lights. It has been through mayby 200 discharge cycles now and 2-5 complete drains. It still reads about 11.5 volts after sitting around for 3 years with minimal use. I do not know how much current reserve it can still deliver at this point, but it can still be used to jump a car or power a small amp on a bench test. I use it for emergency lighting, when the power goes out As Mr. B. says, the ALT is your primary source of power. The BAT just stores power for use, when the ALT cannot keep up with demand. This means your vehicles overall voltage is unstable and is experiencing rather large voltage drops. This places the alt. in a state that makes it charge at peak output more than usual which shortens the life 30-50%. Even high output alts. lifespan shortens when it is constantly running on peak output.
