beginner advice?

Hi, I'm all new to fitting my own car audio and just wanted to ask the experts a couple of questions. I picked up a new headunit (Aiwa) so that i can plug my Ipod into the front aux, and the seller threw in some 13cm xplod speakers. I was wondering how easy it would be to fit these in my car, a '93 Peugeot 106 (Kid Edition). The headunit should be easy enough (AIWA CDC-R237 - shouldn't be a problem should it?) but I was wondering about the speakers... Won't be able to simply take the factory speakers in the door out and put those in will I? If not any ideas for what else to do? I havn't done any car audio before, wiring or anything, but I'll get some help from a mate who has if I can. Will the wiring be simple enough? Only cost £30 for the lot, so its not a great loss, but I'm a skint student and can't really afford for it to all be fitted by a garage.

Welcome to CK too_new!

Good little HU you picked up there friend. The install of same should go well with some help from an experienced friends help. It would be best to find an adapter type wiring harness, that converts OEM wiring to Aftermarket HU's. These are low cost and a real time saver in the long run.

As for speakers, try to figure out what size speakers are in this vehicle now. Stock speakers are generally inferior to even low budget aftermarket speakers like the Sony's mentioned. It would be good to use 2-way Coaxials or Component speakers up front. This will give better high frequency audio performance up front. (where you want it most) The rear speakers can be coaxial or just full range units, depending on your budget and preferences.

This HU has about 20 watts (RMS) power per channel. (4 channels) Not a great deal of power, but often much better than a Stock HU that delivers maybe 8-15 watts RMS x 4. Using very efficient speakers will help get the loudness up there, but some speaker makers really fudge their numbers on efficiency/sensitivity ratings. (Sony is one of them) A good speaker can deliver decent listening levels of this low power if it has a true efficiency number above 90dB at 1 watt/1 meter.

Finally, it looks like this HU has a single pair of RCA outputs for aux amplifiers. It can be used to power a modest amped sub or even full range for the front speakers only. This could improve the overall performance of the front speakers with minimal costs.

Note: We want to put our best speakers and power to the front stage speakers. This is what the driver hears most.
