i personally think the alpine CDA-9827 was one of the finer head units that i've owned. it's awesome, has MP3, three sets of preouts, sub controls, ai-net, everything you could ask for. it's really attractive, too. you can get them cheap on ebay.

I would definitley go with UK.... Alpine makes some inredibly nice gear, and are well priced for the performance....

Pioneer? I wouldn't consider personally... had a couple... pioneer Deh650mP, hated it....$500 radio, hated it.
I have had two alpine decks, and loved em both, The one I had most recent is the 9827 he is talking about....would definitely recomend it.

After decades of use of CD players, I have come to the conclusion that they are all about the same until you get to signal processing. My most recent ones were an alpine (2003 model) and a Pioneer 83 or 8400 (2002 model). Although there are new model numbers every year, the basic components haven't changed since 1996. That's right, NINETEEN NINETY FRICKIN SIX!!!!!!!!!!! Just LCD displays, and the addition of MP3 (which is nothing) and that's it.

Same mechanisms, same lasers (or at least same quality) same exact software, etc. What differs is the features, which can be useful, and other are not useful. Here's the useful ones:

Pre Out Voltage: Recommend 4V or higher (most important one)
MP3 Compatible: If not, don't buy it
Front and Rear Preouts: If you get an extra subwoofer preout, sweet!!
Subwoofer level control: if you get one, sweet!

After that, all those display options, equalizers, bass boosts are just a lot of fluff that you don't need, but might like to have. I will say that I've used the following manufacturers to my liking:

(in no order)

Alpine
Pioneer (and premier)
JVC
Panasonic
Nakamichi
Eclipse
Kenwood (and Excelon)
Audiovox
Clarion
Denon
Sony

and a 1/2 dozen others that don't come directly to mind. Feature-wise, you get quite a bit of value with Pioneer, Alpine, and Kenwood, it's just a matter of how much you want to spend. In car audio, Alpine, Sony and Pioneer are the longest standing ones still around, but certainly, I would recommend most of the manufacturers as there just isn't much difference.

From a price standpoint, I would get the top 3 options to allow you to maximize your audio system. 4V preouts or higher, MP3 Compatible and subwoofer control under that dash make life easier.

Also, I've had a lot of fun with the Pioneer EQ functions as they'll allow you parametric functions like narrower or wider bandwith on the boost/cut--but that may be way ahead of where you are going. It's been a peeve of mine that manufacturers come up with 'time-delays' and 'loudness controls' and package them under names like BASS ENGINE. Believe me, all the features besides the ones I mentioned above are just fluff.

Pioneerwise, the 8600 and the 80mp models have pretty much all the features you need, and reasonably priced.

You might want to explain why you disliked your 650mp?
