OT: What are the gas prices in your area?

Well folks, Katrina has passed and left an overwhelming state of emergency in gulf coast regions of AL, MS and LA. From reading the news reports, these poor souls will be dealing with devastation and the hardships caused by this storm for many years to come. Pray for them as you see fit.

Noticed the gas prices have jumped rapidly over the past few days here in SE Michigan. Am seeing good deals at $2.89/gal., and gouging above $3.10/gal. The nominal is above $2.95/gal and expected to rise well into the Labor Day weekend.

President Bush is planning to "lend" emergency stocks of crude oil to refiners, (at a nice profit later, I might add) to help ease the losses of incoming oil that has ground to a screeching halt in the gulf coast region. It is noted we have a 700 million barrel stock pile of "cheap crude" in reserves. How much will be released is not yet been determined.

The problem is not just lack of crude oil coming in, but the refineries ability to process and distribute what they have already. The worst case scenario seems to be akin to 500 people, peeing into a 2,000,000 gallon toilet. A trickle coming in, but not much ability to process it into usable products anyway.

What are you guys seeing out there at the moment?

gas here went from 2.49 last week to 2.89 for regular unleaded. is supposed to be going to 3.09 by end of this weekend...sux very much....lol thats almost half of what some of youngsters around here make.... lol ive only been driving for 5 years but i remember when it was 97 cents a gallon... lol parents recall around 15-25 cents a gallon lol. old fogies.

swez on 08/31/2005 21:41:29
Old fogies? Hrmph, I resemble that remark!

Pumped gas when in HS. The prices then were about $0.24/gal., until the oil embargo hit in 1974. Even then, the price was still about $0.70/gal for a few months.

Here in Knoxville, TN it went from 2.49$ two days ago to 2.75$ last night, and now its at 3.10$ all day today.

Lowest i recall is 89cents a gallon. Those were the days.......

i have to take a loan out to fill my truck up nowadays!

82 dollars each fill up, once a week, thats almost 4,000 dollars a year for automobile transportation at todays prices!!!!!!!!!

My brother rode his bicycle to work yesterday. 12 miles. Pure Genius

Tinker18 on 08/31/2005 23:35:30
down here, it went from $2.39 to $2.69 and is still expected to go up.....think i might just take my horse to work tomorrow. it costs me 60 dollars to fill up once a week. i could feed my horse off that for two weeks....... even so, the cheapest here in texas is 2.40 a gal.

Update.... gas is now $3.15 as of Wednesday night and the projected jump over the Labor Day weekend is close to $3.50. Interesting human phenomena to be noted here... when there is a catastrophy, human greed comes to visit, along side the good Samaratin. One has the mindset to help, find and feed the flock. The other comes to fleese the flock.

wow, I thought it was bad here. I caught wind that it was gonna spike and gassed up a few days ago at $2.85, it is anywhere from $3.05 to $3.40 a gal depending on where you are in town.

Funny enough though I was up early and decided to take the dog for a walk this morn before it got too hot(around 6:30 am). I was really enjoying the temp but was amazed at how everyone that drove by had their windows up, I am bettin the ac was on too. I finally got my ac fixed this year ($1200 worth!) and have been enjoying it for the first time in 3 years. I forgot how much it eats in the milage though.

Today started my weekend so I was back in the truck. I updated the site, check it out. I was interupted this afternoon by a dust storm(a cool pic is on the site) but after it blew over, I finished the first cover board. It needs some minor sanding and filling but it looks good so far. SOOOOOO much more to go...........

Beau640 on 09/2/2005 00:40:47
Well around Detroit i'd say it averages around $3.40 but i hear as you go much further north in Michigan it's close to $4.00 a gallon :(

oldmazda on 09/2/2005 01:37:43
i was 10 hours or about 650 miles out of town when gas prices jumped 20 cents and thats even after a 20 cent jump just a few weeks ago. made the trip home a little more expensive than the trip there. right now gas is $1.189 per litre that works out to about $4.50 candian per gallon, so that is about 3.80 per gallon.

wow being one of the few canadians on this site really means doing a lot of unit and currency conversions to put this all into words that will make more sense to you guys eh.

Well, things are looking better again... prices at the local gas station have dropped to $2.99/gal as of Friday, 9/2/05. (PM) Looks like the gougers and profit taking have made enough (or got lots of heat) from various sources, to bring prices back down.

Hey, there is a feature called "Gasbuddy" in most larger cities that can tell us where the best prices are in a given area. Use that as a guide and perhaps, sign up for the site and become a "man on the street" reporter of good deals.

well glad to hear gas is going down somewhere it just jumped another 5 cents over the last couple days. in nothern alberta we have one of the largest oil deposits in the world in the tar sands, yet for some dumb reason our gas is way more expensive than the states. we sell the gas to you how do you get it for a cheaper price than us if we are the ones selling it to you? i'm rather not pleased with the way gas prices are now. but what other option do i have i have to get to work and the only way i can get there is to drive, plus i surely don't have enough money to buy a vehicle that is better on gas.

if gas prices keep going up either nobody's gonna have money to put into car audio or else nobody is going to be able to afford to have a car to put the audio into.

Tinker18 on 09/5/2005 14:35:58
prices in texas dropped 28 cents yesterday.

Ttocs, get online with www.gasbuddy.com and search best reported prices in your area. This shouold help you locate the best prices in your locale, w/o doing all the running around yourself.

Am noting gas prices are still hovering at $2.99/gal with a few stations dropping prices now. Best price I see in my area now, is $2.79/gal. Gonna try it on my way out tonight.

Yeah, some anal-ist, anarchist (whatever.. those big brained idiots) have been saying the US should become use to a $2.50/gal at the pump before too long and be happy about it. "Frankly, the price of gas is actually still cheap when adjusted for inflation"... they also claim.

In reality, gasoline is still pretty cheap. It's the taxes and other add on fees we don't see, that are picking our pockets dry at the pump. Some states, have a low tax number of about 13 cents/gal. In other states, it can be well over 30 cents/gal. If you wish to know how much state, federal and sundry taxes are on a gallon of gas in your state, have a look at this chart.

http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/statistics/gas_taxes_by_state_2002.html

These are 2002 data points. Am sure the numbers are somewhat higher, now in latter 2005. Looks like quite a few fingers are in this pie huh?

Swez

PS Gas prices average (here in SE Michigan) $2.62/gal. Best prices in the area are about $ 2.57 per gasbuddy.com. (about 48 cents of that are taxes)

cplkittle on 09/17/2005 20:46:04
hey guys, remember me?
sorry I have been absent from the board..
here's my 2 cents or 20 cents now due to inflation.
I believe this whole thing is BS. Prices here jumped to over $4.00 right after the hurricane hit. Their excuse was that one of the pumping stations in florida that supplied the Atlanta area did not have power and was damaged from the storm. Whatever excuse they use it all boils down to greed if you ask me. Currently, the stereo shop I work for is closed on saturdays now. Saturdays used to be our biggest day, but since we have to follow suit by being open on weekdays or standard business days, we had to choose saturdays. Sales are at an all time low, and I will be looking for work elsewhere in a week or two. My last check was barely $200, but it was my chioce to take commission over salary. Now I am wondering if I can afford to get to work, if you can even call it work. One headunit and one amp install a day is hardly work. Hope things shape up before Christmas.

swez on 09/17/2005 22:57:46
Hey Kit, good to see ya back on the board again. That story really sounds awful man.

Am sure glad I cut and ran on the sales job we disussed a few months back. I can just see being stuck in a nowhere job, no money and no way to get out. I guess I need to keep trusting that little voice that said... "Nope, this is not the place for you."

Hope you can find a better opportunity down there... real soon.

Good luck and keep in touch,
Swez
