Remember Ur 1st System THINK

Hey guys I thought I would start a thread telling everybody what are first system was, because if it was anything like mine it was ugly.
I know it might be hard for a couple of are members to remember way back *cough swez and ttocs cough* GRIN.

Heres mine:
Subs: 2 12" MTX Thunder Pros or Road Thunder Pros (something like that) That were real old that I got from my dads friend for free. (He said they were the best back in the day 80's???)

Box: Me and my friend made a sealed box that had gaps in it out of partical board. Then we decided to drill to holes in it the size of a pop can. Who knows what size it was because we didnt measure we just cut and drilled it together.

Amp: I bought a kenwood which was decent, and we wired it correctly amazingly lol.

Speakers: Pioneer 6X9's

This was all done in a 97 Cavalier around 2000 -2001 when i got my license.

The subs were so old that the outer edge became unglued and would make loud noises so i had this green tape and taped it all around the edges. As you can tell thats when i didnt know what i was doing.
Oh about 2 weeks later someone stole it. Suckers insurance covered it and i got a good system.

Lets here what you guys had, any horror storys like mine?

Oye boy, you are asking a lot from "Old Man Audio" dude. The best I can recall, had a 1980 Datsun 310 GX hatchback. Got one of those 7 band EQ/amp combos (Sparkomatic I think) that installed between HU and speakers. It may have been about 10 watts/channel back then.

Also, replaced stock speakers with 2-way bookshelf mini's from Radio Shack. They were the only game in town back then. (circa 1981?)

Results: Sounded louder, lots of noise (tape hiss) from the amp when playing cassette tapes. Cro2 just came out about that time frame as I recall. Bass? What's that mean during the 70's Rock era? Recording technology was just not there back then. Only if you had a great record player and preamp, Dolby compander and decent speakers, could one get much bass at all.

There was not much bass available in those days. I was a bass player at the time, so I put my Ampeg SVT bass bottom (6x10's) in and powered them with matching Ampeg SVT Head. (300 RMS) Naturally, I had lots of bass now. Only problem, had to power the amp with 110 volts AC from an extension cord. I could drive 100' forward or backward as that was the limit of the power cable I had at the time. If I remember right, this system really strained the suspension system on this little car. The HU weighed 90 lbs and the speaker box was ~125 lbs.

Man, that was a long time ago... 34 years ago this summer! Just call me Mathusala of car audio eh?

man what an excellent idea for a thread.

my first system was in a 1993 four door honda civic. it was a pioneer head unit with pioneer speakers all the way around, and a 200 watt MTX amp pushing two 10 inch Thunder 3500 subs. it didn't sound too bad for the time. i didn't know anything about car audio at the time.

lol first system was pretty expensive. cuz i was young and dumb, just got my license so i thought i knew everything... it consisted of: pioneer 7200 head unit, first year of the organic screen i believe, mtx 4x6 plates, mtx 6x9s mtx 302 amp, and 12 inch first year solo baric... all being powered by the 302 lol, had the fronts and rears parellel on the front channel and had the sub bridged on the back 2 channels... all stinger wires and interconnects. lol interior was loud but the bass was very muffled lol, i know that was the death of that sub, giving it 125 watts or so with bass boost up almost all the way as well as the gain.... now i look back probably why my amp overheated every 45mins to an hour...but it was def the niceset system in my school, i remember going into the audio shop, got my bill what like 1700 with out the sub... first installment i payed like 600 or so, next trip lol 900 dollars in all 20 dollar bills, lil i looked like a drug dealer.... then another 500 for the solobaric lol whata joke huh... just my two cents

I don't think anyone should be allowed to put their first system in her if they are still on their same system. Swez? Ampeg? That's like Bob Dole old, mang.

'79 Nova Panasonic Tape, Jensen 4" dual cone, Jensen 6x9's in some 'quality' boxes that I made especially for them. :-) No amp, no eq, evidently, no girlfriend.

My second system was a Suzuki tape, Alpine 7band booster EQ, then, I quickly ditched it all.

System 3 '89 Gutlass Cutlass

Alpine 7914 (or 7915,...whichever one the ENTIRE head unit was detachable)
Alpine 3553 (35x4 bridged to 2 channels)
Alpine 75x2 (for 6x9s)
2 Punch 75 (one for each sub)
2 Rockford 'audiophile' series components (F & back doors)
Alpine 6963 6x9" for back deck

Basically, I had the equivalet of 1.5 Horsephower, and 12 speakers in one car!!!!! What a hillbilly!!!

In 1979 I bought a 1973 MG Midget, from the original owner, that was in primo condition. The stock radio really sucked so I bought a Craig Road Rated Reciever AM/FM/Cassette deck, an Audiovox Sound Exploder "amp", and a set of 6x9 speakers (don't remember the brand, but they weren't el cheapo's). That "amp" was a really simple deal. It had one button and one LED, and was about the size of 2 packs of Marlboros. It was either on or off, no adjustments, 35w peak (if I remember correctly). It took me ALL weekend (Fri. evening to Sun. evening) to install this in that street legal go-kart. It didn't sound too bad, all things considered (convertible, no extra insulation, etc.). The Craig lasted me through 2 more cars over the next 14yrs. Remember when radios had dials and an analog station inficator? Jeez, I'm gettin' old.

OT chat with Gearhead moved to main board.

Sorry guys, did not mean to hijack this budding post. It just started growing, so I removed same.
