I did a big system in an expidition. 4-!2" Image Dynamics powered by a Phoenix gold zx950(old zx450 and 500 under same chassis). we built a false floor out of mdf and plexi. We just cut the woof to the proper height with the table saw. The hard part is getting the sides to mesh with the car..

i also am thinking about doing a false floor...well more like an amp rack.....this is how im thinking of doing it....haveing the sub box as far back towards the front of the car as possible.....subs fireing towards the trunk lid....and haveing the false floor going all the way across and haveing either a JBL600.1 or a 1200.1 in it.....this will be angled at ~45 degrees with Plexi Glass covering the amp so the amp will be mounted in the false floor.....question....will this cause over heating problems with the amp? if so......would a couple of fans in the false floor (outta site) be a good way to cool the amp? im also thinking of putting a lot of either blue or red led's all around the plexi so it will light the trunk up at night....sound good?

weird, thats what im doing... 2 shivas placed further into trunk, firing rearward, the false floor is my amp rack, with 2 JBL 180.2 and 1 JBL 80.4.... the 80.4 is going to be facing the normal way, with the 180.2 both angled... toward the middle.. like / - \ .. with a much less angle than that.. but you get it.. covered in plexi, perhaps lexan.. with blue neons under the plexi.. to light up the trunk... directly behind my 60/40 fold down rear seats is going to be another 'box' that will have my power distro, and caps behind plexi (about 1'x3') of it.. with blue neon accents.. i know how to make the sub boxes, and the distro/cap box.. i understand the false floor.. i just needed to know what to put underneath it to support it. can anyone explain? im using 3/8" plywood, as to keep the weight down for the false floor... with 3/4" MDF for the sub box. all of it is going to wrapped in carpet so it all looks all nice and neat.

Freaky.......are you going to put any fans in to cool the amps? and as far as support for your false floor.....id just go with some plywood for the bottom 2x4's or 4x8's in the middle for support...some more plywood ontop of that....and then put your amps on that pice of plywood....and just make like a box up from that...with holes cut out for the amp...not sure if you want the amps recessed in the floor like i do but thats prety much what im doing....

If you do plan to hide the amps in an enclosed or confining space, may well need to use input and exhaust fans to move air and keep the amps cool.

You can buy 12 volt fans at Radio Shack and if you really want to make it high tech, install a thermal switch to the fan circuit. Once the thermal switch sense a predetermined temperature, it will activate the fans. When the temperature is nominal, the fans will turn off.

Keep em cool eh?

yes, they are to be recessed into the false floor.. with plexi, or lexan covering them...

Swez : yes i am going to use input and exhaust fans.. they sell computer ones that have blue leds in them as they spin.. very cool. ooo a TS.. didnt think of that one.. good idea, it will also add longetivity to their lives ;) im under the impression that they are 12v.. i will have to check with that again, cause i think computers run off 24v... if they do, then ill just go with the regular boring RS 12v fans.

GT_man : the entire floor is going to be raised 3" to accomodate the recessment of the amps [oo nice word usage..]. i was thinking of making individual little compartments for the amps.. and using the stock floor as the support for those, the walls of these would hit, and be screwed to the false floor, making a little compartment. So im thinking of perhaps making 2x4 blocks 2-5/8" high that will sit on the trunk floor, and hold up the 3/8" plywood.. and have those screwed into the false floor as well... the plywood will be formed to the walls of the trunk, so that it will not move when turning corners, etc... as you all can see.. im really thinking a lot about this, and your comments are veryyyy much appreciated.. anymore ideas, are very welcome. as i want to make this as good as possible, cause i dont want to do it more than once lol. If only i had taken the woods class in school =/.

use a large piece of cardboard and cut out the general shape of the sides of the trunk. You can then trim it little by little until it is perfect. make sure you do that at the same height the floore will be, or on top of the 2x4's that you will use to support it. Once you have the shape transfer it to the plywood that you plan on using. Mdf would be better here as plywood tends to warp a little easier. If you want to add a window. Figure out where the amp will be and make a cut out. You can mount the plexi to the bottom of the false floor to hide the screws. If you make the cut out carefully you can then cover the piece you cut out with matching carpet/vinyle and make a cover for when you don't want it to be seen. I have some pics of the expidition that could help to show this if there is somewhere that I could post them. I have a scanner....
