at low volumes, i can hear static. when i rev my car, the static ticks faster. what should i be checking? i think i should recheck the ground wire to the stereo. i noticed it after i had my timing belt and water pump replaced, but i don't think that has anything to do with the stereo. btw, the stereo is an alpine cda-9835 and the car is a 91 honda accord. thanks guys.

i cant get what u mean to say by static.. but to me it seems more like the alternator whine, usually a result of poor ground and/or ground loop issues..

Try re-grounding all audio components ( HU, AMps etc. ) according to
http://www.clubknowledge.com/Car_Audio_FAQ/?t4 this article..

Hope that helps..

i already upgraded the big 3 wires (battery to ground, chassis to ground, and power from alternator to battery) with 4 ga wire. and i guess i should recheck all my wiring because like i said before, it started happening after i replaced my timing belt. i just don't wanna go through all the wiring again if i don't need to. but i guess i will have to =)

Engine noise is easily identified, but some can be very hard to root out. Most times the HU is not grounded properly to firewall or floor pan. Aftermarket HU's do not like factory ground wires as they often connect to other devices in the instrument cluster. That often creates a "ground loop" as noted earlier and thus, engine noise issues.

Don't see any obvious connections between noise and timing belt/water pump repairs. Only if the grounding strap from engine to body was disturbed, would make that an issue.

any other equipment?

well i have two amps, one running the inside speakers and one for the subs in the back. i haven't had time to recheck my wiring but i don't see why changing the timing belt would cause the engine whine.....except maybe the tension of the alternator belt needs to be adjusted. maybe i'll try that first.

Do you have an amplifier installed? or just the head unit.

If you have an amp, check out this post in the area about SYSTEM NOISE:

If not, never mind.

thanks for the link MrBrownstone...i figured out what the problem was. my power cable was too close to the rca cables in the back of the HU, thus amplifing the noise when it went to the amp. i moved it around and the noise went away. thanks guys.
