first off i have a 92 explorer and i put a pioneer DEH-6700 HU and 2 pioneer 6x9s and i have a set of audiobahn 12's in the factory audiobahn bandpass box.i need a amp for my subs and i was looking a a visonik 2 channel 1400watt amp and i am kind of new to all the different numbers and measurments . also if u could tell me if visonik is a good quality amp if it isn't then could u suggest one for my subs.just keep in mind i'm on a budget preferably under 200$.Oh and i don't need a competition setup i just want it to sound good.PLEASE HELP!!! Here is the info for the amp- Visonik V2608 1400W 2-channel Bridgeable Car Amplifier 350W x 2 RMS output 700W x 2 max output 0.05 THD 90dB S/N ratio Full MOSFET Class AB circuitry Red anodized heat sink 2 ohm stereo stable 4 ohm mono stable Gold-plated RCA/power connections Thermal/short circuit protection Variable high/low pass filters 20Hz-20kHz frequency response Switchable on/off bass boost High/low level inputs 4-gauge power inputs Built-in cooling fan Here is the info for my subs- Audiobahn ABP12T DUAL 12” TUNED BANDPASS SYSTEM High Quality MDF Construction grey Carpeted Covering 3/8” Plexiglass Window Dual 12” Molded, Texture Injected Poly Cone 50 oz. I looked up the specs on that amp and it appears to be a pretty solid product on paper. 350 RMS x 2 @ 4 ohms/ch. 500 RMS x 2 @ 2 ohms/ch. 1000 Rms x1 @ 4 ohms Mono THD: 0.05% @ rated RMS power One thing you may have an issue with here, this amp is likely to pull a lot of current at full rated power. (80A or more?) That can be a strain on your electrical system. Especially at idle speeds. Do you know the fused ratings for this amp? Swez butterbeanmachine on 07/14/2005 23:42:17 the info i have listed is all i know about the amp and my box does have 2 sets of terminals. another quick question what do u mean when u say THD: 0.05% @ rated RMS power just trying tro learn as much as possible butterbeanmachine on 07/15/2005 09:11:20 Swez thanks for the help i went to the DIY articles. In one of the articles I saw visonik listed under bad section. I thought they were decent amps. I want something at a decent price that sounds good(once again i dont need a competition system) but will last me for a good while. If they aren't could u list some under like 250$ that are compadable to my subs and are good quality.USFLAG THANKS AGAIN. swez on 07/15/2005 11:10:30 THD = Total Harmonic Distortion + Noise This rating determines how faithfully the amp reproduces audio signals w/o adding distortions (harmonics infussion or noise). The lower the number of THD, the quieter the amp is in terms of added noise. FYI: Most newer amps are using a CEA 2006 compliant rating system. That's 14.4 volts input supply voltage from the BAT/ALT and <1.0% THD + Noise. Most people cannot even detect low frequency THD levels below ~3%. For Mids/Highs applications, 1-2% THD is hard to detect (heaqring wise) w/o an OSC scope. Quality of this amp? No specific experience with Visonik products. They are low priced, decent features and power ratings (on paper) look pretty impressive. Do they meet that spec in the real world? I cannot say as I have not tested any. That DIY list is very subjective to the writer's comments and experience with listed products. His recommended and Premium lists are pretty much on target, but there are a few bargain brands that may still be useful, on a tight budget. Here are few quality amps to shop hard to get that price range. The first grouping is adequate power and lower prices. The 2nd grouping are higher priced amps, but high quality. Some careful shopping is needed to get near the price range mentioned. =================================================== http://www.thezeb.com/p-Kenwood-KAC-9102D-109954.htm http://www.thezeb.com/p-Phoenix-Gold-Octane-R-R8.0:1-102977.htm http://www.cardomain.com/item/HIFTX1005D http://www.cardomain.com/item/KENKAC9102D http://www.cardomain.com/item/POWA1000DB =================================================== http://www.crutchfield.com/S-mmQcsSChcNX/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=113XXV03A&g=130&search=kenwood&wmsf=1 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-mmQcsSChcNX/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=130&I=236TA5601&search=mtx&wmsf=1 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-mmQcsSChcNX/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=130&I=2064KX6001&search=kicker&wmsf=1 Hope that helps, Swez butterbeanmachine on 07/17/2005 08:45:53 Swez, I just wanted to thank you for all the help and also for having a great forum to go to. I decided not to get the visonik amp i just figured that u get what u pay for.A friend of mine owed me for swaping the motor in his car so he gave me a rockford 60 series punch amp and some change.I also have another buddy of mine whose cousin ownes a car audio shop. And he is sellin last years stock on sale and since I'm good friends with his cousin he's goin to sell me an amp for his cost straight from the factory plus 40% off.So I'm gettin a 1200 rockford amp and then stappin the 60 series to it.Besides I'll have less than 150$ in it when I'm finished. How do u think it will sound.Do you think it will hurt my subs. Also what do you and Less think the sound quality will be like. Thanks again, Chris USFLAG lessismorespl on 07/17/2005 10:03:25 I would not strap the 60 series to the new RF amp, do you know the model # of the new RF amp you plan to buy? Does the Audiobahn enclosure have 2 speaker terminals wired @ 4ohms ea, or one terminal wired to 4ohms? As for the SQ, Audiobahn subs are not well known for their sound quality, but they do get very loud. Being in a tuned bandpass made for those subs will most likely be an advantage, so it may sound pretty good. It will definately produce some serious SPL. Is the 60 series amp a 2 ch.? If it is, use that to run your 6x9's, it will equal out the mids/highs w/ the subs and clean up those 6x9's especially at high volume. This system will be loud, SQ may be lacking a bit, but it will not sound bad either...it will definately have some SPL so people will hear you coming! less swez on 07/17/2005 12:39:41 That RF sub amp model number would be most helpful. With that, we can give you some feedback on how to use it well with the Bahn subs mentioned. As Less mentioned, Bahn subs in a Bahn designed BP enclosure will no doubt be a loud SPL Bass machine. It is wired for 2 channels. Each sub is net 4 ohms each. A Class D mono amp with 800-1000 watts RMS power @ 2 ohms would be a very good option here. If this new RF amp has more power than that, a careful setup process will insure the subs will last. An AC voltmeter (DMM) is the best tool for setting your amp gains, so as not to overpower these subs. (blow em up) That Punch 60 series amp... what is it? Not that familiar with the older Punch series. (pre-2000) Got a model number or specs on same? Also, what do you plan to run with that amp? Say more BBM, Swez butterbeanmachine on 07/18/2005 08:47:40 I haven' t made it too the shop yet been workin alot of overtime. But I know I'm gettin a 1200-1400 watt amp that is rockford. What model would u suggest to get?And the 60 series is a 1ch amp that my friend referred to as a cheater amp.He said the amp by itself dosn't put out that much power but when u strap it to another amp it multiplies the watts of that amp. I don't know if that is true but thats what he said. And Less i still want to be able to have a working ballance on my HU and my explorer has a factory JBL amp for all the 6x8s and 6x9s and im happy with the highs and mids.So you guys wouldn't suggest strapin the amps together. And I have my wires ran and my power wire is 4AWG is that ok to use with the 1400 watt amp. Thanks for ur help, Chris USFLAG butterbeanmachine on 07/18/2005 08:48:52 oh and what is SPL butterbeanmachine on 07/18/2005 09:13:34 also a friend of mine went to a show and got 167 decibals out of his van ps its a gmc safari has 18 batteries 12 8000 watt amp 8 memphis 15's and4 12's swez on 07/18/2005 09:29:43 SPL mean Sound Pressure Level. (expressed in dB's) 60dB is a quiet library 80dB is a busy street 90dB a typical lawnmower 100dB good concert level at 100 feet from stage 120dB concert level at stage (hearing damage potential over time) 130dB or more is very loud, need hearing protection and short exposure times to prevent hearing loses Not sure on that Punch 60 amp. You won't need it with a larger sub amp anyway. About what RF amp to look at: http://www.thezeb.com/p-Rockford-Fosgate-T10001BD-Mono-Subwoofer-Amplifier-107313.htm This amp has plenty of power for your subs. (750 RMS @ 2 ohms) Not a cheap amp in price, but good features, solid brand name and will do the job. The tricky part will be integration with your JBL factory system amps. There may be an integration patch kit for this, to make the install easier. Frankly, it's not a best fit choice as this amp can pull well over 100A of current at full power. (150A internally fused) Amp also recommends a 1/0 power and ground wire. (you have a #4 setup already) Some of the older RF amps, may be a better fit. Do you have access to other brands of amps from your source? If so, find out what he has available in the 800-1000 Watt (RMS) range @ 2 ohms. Am sure there are other products that will fit your budget and power needs better than the amp noted above. This one is a huge current hog. Would this be sufficient and also why would I have to itegrate it with my factory amp.I already have the 60 series hooked up and I didnt have to deal with the factory amp at all. Also I have always heard that JBL is a really good amp is this true. swez on 07/19/2005 08:35:10 Punch 60 installed as a sub slave already? Does it drive your subs well with clean power? Say more... JBL makes some pretty good stuff in Pro, HT and now Car audio formats. Their parent company (Harman Intl.) also has Infinity, Crown, Harmon Kardon, Becker and a few other entities under their umbrella. JBL amps have proven reliable, dependable, accurate and rugged. Not only that, they are price conscious as well. (a good value) That amp will do a good job pushing your Bahn subs in 2 channel or bridged mode. (Mono sub amp) I recall the spes, but it seems like one of the newer Infinity amp line specs. Get a model # and we'll have a look. Swez lessismorespl on 07/19/2005 09:01:54 Actually, it an older version they came out w/ around the time they started producing the Crown Servo amps. I believe it is a GTO series, they made several high powered 2 channel amps. I will see if I can find the model number and specs in some fo my archive files. Those were really good amps, but had an extremely high current draw due to the power. I believe the one I tested came off the board @ around 1800 wRMS x 2 at 2ohms and around 3400 wRMS bridged. They were some real powerhouse amps. less butterbeanmachine on 07/19/2005 18:10:30 i already have the 60 installed and the subs beat ok but it doesn't sound very good its not exactly what i want. but why would i have to deal with the factory amp swez on 07/19/2005 18:41:56 JBL OEM amps are setup to drive factory mated speakers. I cannot remember where I was reading about this, but it seems to me, the voltage/signal tap for audio outs from the JBL OEM system needs a tweak to match amp impedence levels for Aftermarket amps. Most aftermarket amps can manage 0.5 - 5.0 volts input off the RCAs to a load impedence of 10,000 ohms. (amp input impedence) However, JBL OEM systems are designed for JBL speakers. Not sure what the best way to work around that issue might be. Wait for one of our intall guys to comment. UK, ttocs or lessismore (perhaps others) may have some helpful tips to guide you along. This may be why the cheater amp is not up to par SQ and power wise. Wish I could be of more help on this part, Swez butterbeanmachine on 07/20/2005 07:13:41 im sorry i still dont under stand i have a pioneer HU so i ran the rca's off of that sorry really following u on that swez on 07/20/2005 09:56:05 OK, we are missing some key details that might simplify the new upgrade plans. That Pioneer HU is made in Germany. It has 27 x 4 watts RMS speaker amps and 1 pair of RCA lines. (rated at 14.4 volts input source) How do you have the Pioneer HU wired to the Factory system now? Knowing that, we can look at some options. Be detailed about this as it is important to know what has been done so far. Swez butterbeanmachine on 07/21/2005 15:21:10 I think I gave you the wrong number for my HU it is the Pioneer DEH-P6700MP it has 2 sets of rca jacks 1 sub set and 1 regular speaker set.I have the factory wiring harness adapter that u can buy at wally world(walmart). Then I have my rca and remote wires ran under the carpet on the passenger side and my power wire ran through the fire wall(yes I have a rubber grommet where I drilled the hole) and under the carpet on the drivers side then I have my grounds hooked with a self tapping screw on bare metal under the back seat.My power wire is 4awg and so is my ground. Is this the info you need if you need more just let me know what. Also does this all sound like the right way to do the wiring. And when I do get the new amp(should be by next weekend)which way should I wire it.My subs have 2 sets of terminals(1 set for each speaker) and the amp has two channels please give a detailed description. Thanks again for all the help swez, Chris(butterbean) USFLAG swez on 07/21/2005 17:58:34 Ahhhh, that's the detail needed. Since HU has a Sub channel out already, use that to drive your sub amp. You may also use the paired stereo outs from your HU to a 2 channel amp, if you wish. Much easier here. As for your RCA's from HU to amp, keep them as far from power lines as is possible to prevent noise. Twisted pair RCA's are great for blocking out engine noise within the vehicle. HU grounding to floor pan or firewall is also highly recommended. About amp to subs, since you have dual terminals, good to run 1 sub per channel here. If you had a MONO amp that was stable at 2 ohms, we'd look at a different wiring plan. But, since you have stereo amp and stereo subs, runing each sub off its' own channel will do the job. Doing fine so far. Keep up the good work Chris! Swez butterbeanmachine on 07/21/2005 18:02:22 thanks that sounds good i dont have twisted rca wires is that ok and also since i have time should i ground my hu to the fire wall swez on 07/21/2005 18:20:41 Definitely ground the HU to floor pan or fire wall. Since the amps are going to be grounded to floor pan in back, use the floor pan up front for lowest noise potential. No twisted pairs of RCA's, use what you have, but separate them from the main power feed line the best you can. (18" min) Swez PS Do you have Yahoo Chat? butterbeanmachine on 07/21/2005 20:47:26 yeah its butterbeanmachine same for my yahoo email. Is it ok if I ran the rca's with the remote wire but my power wire is like 30" away at the smallest spot swez on 07/22/2005 05:45:09 Sure, many RCA's have attached REM lines. That's a very low power line wire and should be fine as noted. Good distance away... almost 3 feet. When wiring RCA's to amp, if the RCA's cross the power line, try to run them at 90 degree angles to minimize any noise issues. Works for most folks.
