Happy late 4th of july , I have a problem i have a kicker 600.1, i was running 2 jl w3v2d4 i sold those n bought 3 12 inch kicker comp vr dvc4ohm subs know what i need help on is choosing the best amp to power these subs should i buy another 600.1 n put them together or sell it n buy a kicker 1200.1 i also like the jl audio 1000.1 , i can also get a dhd amp that puts out 1200 w at 1 ohms for cheap please help . also i have a 94 nissan maxima with a pioneer deh 4600mp cd deck running kicker 4x6 in front n kicker 6.5 mids in rearthe problem i am having is when i turn it up to about 32 {max 50} the speakers distort as if the power is drained out of the stereo what can i do to fix this , could it be the way you have to ground an aftermarket stereo on this type of car with the antenna adapter? i need help its really annoying. thnxz Replies (19) swez on 07/6/2005 09:15:17 The Kicker XXX.1 series is 2 ohms stable and will balk at anything below 2 ohms. In the 4+4 DVC wiring options, you basically haved 2: 1. Wire in full parallel for a 1 ohm load (Kicker amp won't like it) 2. Wire each sub VC in series (8 ohms each) , then both subs in parallel for a net 4 ohm load (this option nets 150 Wrms per sub) If you went with the 3 Kicker Comp VR (4+4) DVC's, wire each sub for 8 ohms (both coils in series) and then wire all 3 in parallel for a 2.67 ohm load. The KX-1200.1 can handle that, but the enclosure size for all 3 subs can be pretty large. Also, you'd get about 1000 Wrms to the subs this way. Your best bet would be to stick with your Kicker 600.1 and use a pair of Comp VR (2+2) DVC's. Here, the subs can be wired to a perfect 2 ohms and each sub will get 300+ Wrms each. Also, the size of the enclosure would be much more manable too. DHD amp... not recommended. Cheap all right, for a reason! The front and rear speakers may distort heavily off only HU power and no High Pass Filtering (Bass Blockers) to delete signals below operating range. The rear 6.5" should be filtered to pass ~80 Hz and up. The 4x6 front speakers also need a filter, (Bass Blockers) to pass signals above 150-200 Hz. Also, adding a full range amp, might be a good idea for F & R speakers. That will give you more clean power and a good 4 channel (Kicker KX-350.4) would be a good choice here. You can expect ~60 Wrms x 4 with this amp, depending on voltage supply to amp. That's a good match for your 600.1 amp. Finally, if using both amps noted, current demand at full power will be very close to 100A. draw off the electricals. If your car has less than a 120A ALT and a stock BAT, a few upgrades may be needed to get the most from the system noted above. 1. Larger CCA rated BAT (800 CCA or higher) 2. Upgrade the "Big 3 wires" *** 3. Upgrade the ALT for more output *** Explains the "Big 3" wiring upgrade http://www.clubknowledge.com/Car_Audio_FAQ/?g3481_2027 Swez What series speakers do you have in there now? Swez lessismorespl on 07/6/2005 15:50:17 You could run the 3 12's, but your space is extremely limited in that vehicle, so you would pretty much have to go w/ a sealed enclosure and it still wold not benefit you more than 3-5 dB's...if that. I would go w/ 2 of the 12's, and go ported on the enclosure, the money you are saving for the extra sub, and upgrade on the amp would give you some extra cash to have a good enclosure designed and built. I would stick w/ the 600.1 and get 2 of the 2ohm DVC subs, and buy the kicker 4 ch. Swez suggest for your midrange/high speakers. You will be amazed at how much cleaner the speakers will sound using an external amp. Using 2 12's and having a port/vented enclsoure made will net you more dB's than 3 of the 12's, and you would not have to upgrade your sub amp. Rather, upgrade to a 4 ch. amp and your distortion problem is gone, and it would all be cheaper than having the 3rd sub and buying another amp. Many people think more = more.....my name is not lessismorespl for nothing...there is a story behind it! less mrclos909 on 07/9/2005 20:59:36 thanks for the replies ur advise is appreciated i ended up getting a second 600.1 kicker amp the problem im having now is how do i wire each sub for 8 ohm (both coils in series) and then wire all 3 in parellel for a 2. 67 ohm load could u please make a diagram for me or explain it better to me. i have 3 12 kicker cvr dual 4 ohm subs thank you ryan2 on 07/9/2005 23:06:19 For the wiring diagrams go to www.jlaudio.com then click on tutorials then scroll down to wiring your subs and click on that. That should help you out. The diagram your looking for is under 3 DVC Series/Parallel lessismorespl on 07/10/2005 09:27:32 Go here: http://www.bcae1.com choose #58 from the side bar menu "Series/Parallel Impedance". You will see several explanations as well as easy to follow diagrams for wiring your subs. You are still going to have the distortion problem w/ your mids/highs and the syswtem will be very bass heavy, basically your mids/highs will not be able to come through the bass unless turned up to the point of clipping which will create heavy distortion. You will also lose various frequencies out of your subs due to cancellation from having 3 subs in a very confined area. less swez on 07/10/2005 10:35:26 Ditto... am I getting this right... you have 2 KX-600.1 amps and 3 Kicker Comp VR subs? If so, how do you plan to wire 6 (4 ohm) voice coils with 2 MONO amps??? Am kinda puzzled by this install plan so far. Everything mentioned by our posts and recommendations, seem to be ignored? I do see a few ways out of this pending train wreck, but when our suggestions are ignored or bypassed, makes one wonder why you are coming here for advice in the first place. Swez lessismorespl on 07/10/2005 12:33:58 My guess is he is going to wire the subs coils in series, then wire the subs in parallel for a 2.67 ohm impedance, then strap the amps for 1200 wRMS @ 2ohms, - added resistance and the loss of voltage. I do not see where you can fit 3 12's in an Integra w/out having cancellation, which means some freq.'s will sound ok at best, and others will be completely cancelled out. My guess is that it will not give more SPL, in fact, it may end up producing less. In my experences it would have been a better bet to get a good ported/vented enclosure built, it would not only give him more SPL, it would give him better bass response on a broader spectrum. He had mentioned his highs/mids were distorted in the Maxima, he could have bought a good 4 ch. amp and fieasily fixed that problem. I have a HU that is 28 x 4 wRMS and 60 x 4 max and it has highpass/lowpass crossovers, a fully programmable 7 band EQ and I still choose to run a 4 ch. amp b/c the deck's amp will not produce the clean SQ most want from their highs/mids. The only advantage I see from this install is the ability to say "I have 3 12's". As for SQ and/or SPL, it is not going to produce anything more that what it produced w/ 2 W3's. what I see here is the retail commisioned sales guy dream customer. less compvr15s on 07/10/2005 18:00:54 when strapping kicker kx600.1 amps together you get 1200 watts but only at 4 omhs, can not do 2ohm load when strapped, i have 2 kx600.1s as well and they work great, have never starpped them and do not really see a need for then unless competeing or something like that swez on 07/10/2005 19:23:30 Exaxctly! When strapping these amps, you have a 4 ohm min load. yes, he can still do it by 2+2+2 = 6 ohms... but all subs will be in series this way. If one sub croaks... they all stop playing. Couple that with power draw of 100A + (55A/amp) and sub enclosures the size of small coffins (design dependent) and weighing what... 200 lbs plus? Seems like an iffy install, all round the house. What...ever! Swez lessismorespl on 07/10/2005 21:27:53 I am not that familar w/ Kicker amps, have not used them in years. I thought they were 1ohm stable. My bad, thanks for the clarification. But as for the install, it is not impossible, however it is a waste. I really do not understand the purpose of 3 subs in such a confined space. There is no way it will perform as well as 2 subs. If I had the extra amp, I would have either did 2 15's or bought 2 better 12's, such as some L5's and ran one off each amp. Now getting to running the subs in series, you have the problem of frying one sub and the whole system is down, but you also have the problem of increased impedance which will lower the efficiency of the amps. I just do not understand the logic here, as I said before, a commissioned salesman's dream customer, or an eBay sellers dream customer. "Seems like an iffy install, all around the house", I could not have said it better. But we all know there is an installer out there that would take on this job, even though he knows it will not produce optimal results just for the sake of the mighty $$. Sometimes it makes you wonder why we bother.......... I will never give up, for every person that does not listen, there are 3 or 4 that do and are appreciative for the help and very happy w/ the results. I get emails everyday thanking me for my suggestions and assistence....it makes it all worth while guys and you know it gives you that little feeling of satisfaction deep down in our audiophile hearts..... less swez on 07/11/2005 13:26:22 Well said Less... same here! I too get many private e-mails requesting additional help. They almost always turn out right and the guy is happy as a clam. The guys that won't listen and choose to ignore experienced advice... they are on their own as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather make 5 guys satisfied over thier project than deal with a person who is hell-bent on doing it their own way... in the dark, without a light and without a clue. Swez mrclos909 on 07/12/2005 22:24:06 whuts up fellas my pcs been down for a couple days n i finally got it runnin n i read ur reply 's i respect ur comment, i've been to busy gettin my pc upgraded that i havent had time to even look at the second kicker amp i just bought to push the 3 12s it is still unopened & still have receipt for my money back , i bought this amp thinking kicker amps were more versatile like pushing 3 12s with there strapping system . so using two 600.1 strapped together is bad news then please n really mean please recommend a good amp that can push what i am trying to run im going to put it in my maxima .i read on max.org i can put 8'subs in the front doors if i cut the hole out without having window rolldown problems please let me know of a good amp to run thanks to all yall swez on 07/13/2005 10:11:08 Personally, you have the right idea. Just too much of it to make things optimally. Can use the 2 Kicker amps, but am strongly suggesting only 2 Comp VR subs. (1 per amp) It's not how many subs & amps are used, it's about optimizing the install with a well designed sub enclosure and careful attention to amp settings. What kind of bass do you like? Heavy, deep bass as typical in Rap or Hip Hop or tight, chrisp bass for Rock and Jazz? That will dictate the style of box to use. Also, are you looking for an SPL or SQ system? (or a blend of both) SPL = just plain bommin SQ = clean, accurate SQL = clean, accurate and loud Yes, can use a good midbass driver in the doors and a 2-way or 3-way Component system up front. They need to be amped to optimal SQL and the install locations are very important, if you want better than average results. Can explain more later if your wish to know more. Can also delete the rear speakers and leave the holes open for bass to come through them, into the main cabin. However, if you choose to use rear speakers, they MUST be shielded by a barrier enclosure from the heavy bass waves in trunk. (Rear deck install) If you have rear door speakers, that simplifies the install a lot. Say more, Swez PS Often times, less gear used optiamally, is superior to a bunch of kobbled together ideas and such. mrclos909 on 07/15/2005 03:06:31 thanxz to all yall's for ur help , i have a buddy who s willing to trade a brand new kicker 1200.1amp for my two 600.1's would this be better for my situation the reason why i want to go with 3 12's is because i already bought the subs n i know i cant get what i paid for them even though they havent been used i already had a box specially made for 3 12 inch jl w3 v2 i had made for my 97 accord i had laying around i know it s not the same subs but they fall in the same category so what im trying to do is stretch my dollar can i use a 1200.1 to push these n how do i wire them thanks all yalls lessismorespl on 07/15/2005 08:07:25 The Theile Small Parameters are not the same for the JL W3's and the Kicker Comp VR's, you would ahve been better off getting another JL. It may fit in your car, but the subs are so different, right down to the displacement. You would be better off w/ 1200.1 b/c the only way to you will get decent poweer from the amp is by series/parallel wiring: i.e.: wire ea subs coils in series, then wire all 3 subs in parallel for a 2.67 impedance. Go here: HTTP://www.bcae1.com Look in the right side bar menu and go to #58, Series/Parallel impedance. This will give you several options, as well as explanations on how to wire the subs for the lowest impedence.
